Slovakia At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Slovakia competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics after gaining its independence from the former ''Czechoslovakia''. The Slovak Olympic Committee fielded a team of 51 athletes, 32 men and 19 women, across 12 sports at the Games. Although its full roster was larger by four athletes than in London 2012, this was still one of Slovakia's smallest delegations sent to the Summer Olympics. Slovakia made its Olympic debut in archery, as well as its return to synchronized swimming and table tennis after nearly a decade. Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee ( sk, Slovenský olympijský a športový výbor, SOŠV) is the National Olympic Committee representing Slovakia in the International Olympic Committee. It is based in Bratislava, Slovakia. History The Slovak Olympic Committee ( sk, Slovenský olympijský výbor, SOV) was founded on 19 December 1992 and recognized on 20 January 1993. The 2012 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad and also known as London 2012) was an international multi-sport event held from 27 July to 12 August 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. The first event, the group stage in women's football, began on 25 July at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, followed by the opening ceremony on 27 July. 10,768 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the 2012 Olympics. Juraj Tarr
Juraj Tarr (born 18 February 1979) is a Slovak flatwater sprint canoeist who competes in two-man (K-2) and four-man (K-4) events. He participated in four Olympics in the K-4 1000 m event and won silver medals in 2008 and 2016, placing fourth in 2000 and sixth in 2012. He also won eight medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2005–2015, including four gold medals. Tarr belongs to the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. He took up canoeing aged eight, following his father Juraj Tarr Sr., who competed internationally for Czechoslovakia. He was named Slovak Kayaker of the Year in 2014 (together with Erik Vlček) and in 2015. Denis Myšák
Denis Myšák (born 30 November 1995) is a Slovak sprint canoeist. He competes in K-4 events and won a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Career He took up the sport at age eight. Because of his successes in junior category, he was named Slovak Junior Kayaker of the Year in 2012 and 2013. At the 2013 European Junior and U23 Championships he won a gold medal in K-2 500 metres junior race with Tibor Linka. Next year, again with Linka, they finished second in the U23 race. In 2015 he became part of Slovak K-4 team, which had won many medals at the Olympic Games, World and European Championships. With Erik Vlček, Juraj Tarr and Tibor Linka, they won K-4 1000 metres race at the 2015 World Championships. Tibor Linka ( hu, Linka Tibor, born 13 February 1995) is a Slovak sprint canoer who competes in the four-man (K-4) events. He won a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics. Earlier in 2014 he was named Athlete of the Year in his native town of Šamorín. He is of Hungarian ethnicity. Career At the 2013 European Junior and U23 Championships he won a gold medal in K-2 500 metres junior race with Denis Myšák. Matej Beňuš
Matej Beňuš (born 2 November 1987) is a Slovak slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2002. He won a silver medal in the C1 event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He also won 12 medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with nine golds (C1 team: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019), one silver (C1 team: 2022) and two bronzes (C1: 2011, C1 team: 2021). He is a three-time overall world cup champion in the C1 class (2010, 2015, 2019). At the European Championships he won a total of twelve medals (8 golds, 2 silver and 2 bronzes). Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics were held during the last 10 days of the games, from 12 to 21 August 2016, at the Olympic Stadium. The sport of athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics was made into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events. Competition schedule Track and field events were held at João Havelange Olympic Stadium, while the race walks and marathon start and finish in Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Sambódromo, respectively. Apart from the race walks and marathon, ten track and field events held finals in the morning session for the first time since 1988. Canoeing At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Canoeing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was contested in two main disciplines: canoe slalom, from 7 to 11 August, and canoe sprint, from 15 to 20 August. The slalom competition was held at the Olympic Whitewater Stadium; whereas the sprint events were staged at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Copacabana. The location for canoeing events was a source of concern for athletes since the Brazilian federal government's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation lab has found the genes of drug-resistant super bacteria in Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. Around 330 athletes participated in 16 events. Qualification A new qualification system had been created for both slalom and sprint canoeing at the 2016 Olympic Games.
