Sheng Qi
Sheng Qi (; born 1965 in Hefei, Anhui Province, China) is a Chinese performance artist and painter. He was one of the original founders of the Chinese performance art group, Concept 21. Sheng Qi graduated from Beijing Academy of Art and Design in 1988. In 1989, in protest to the massacre at Tiananmen Square, he chopped off the little finger on his left hand and buried it in a porcelain flowerpot, which remained in Beijing during his subsequent exile in Europe. Sheng Qi graduated with an MFA at Central Saint Martins in 1998. In 1999 he returned to Beijing, but returned to London again in 2010, which is where he currently resides. Hefei
Hefei (; ) is the capital and largest city of Anhui Province, People's Republic of China. A prefecture-level city, it is the political, economic, and cultural center of Anhui. Its population was 9,369,881 as of the 2020 census and its built-up (or ''metro'') area made up of four urban districts plus Feidong, Feixi and Changfeng counties being urbanized, was home to 7,754,481 inhabitants. Located in the central portion of the province, it borders Huainan to the north, Chuzhou to the northeast, Wuhu to the southeast, Tongling to the south, Anqing to the southwest and Lu'an to the west. Anhui
Anhui , (; formerly romanized as Anhwei) is a landlocked province of the People's Republic of China, part of the East China region. Its provincial capital and largest city is Hefei. The province is located across the basins of the Yangtze River and the Huai River, bordering Jiangsu to the east, Zhejiang to the southeast, Jiangxi to the south, Hubei to the southwest, Henan to the northwest, and Shandong for a short section in the north. With a population of 63.65 million, Anhui is the 8th most populous province in China. It is the 22nd largest Chinese province based on area, and the 12th most densely-populated region of all 34 Chinese provincial regions. Anhui's population is mostly composed of Han Chinese. Chinese Performance Art
Performance art in China has grown since the 1970s as a response to the very traditional nature of Chinese state-run art schools. It has become more popular in spite of the fact that it is currently outlawed. In 1999 the importance of contemporary Chinese art was recognized by the inclusion of 19 contemporary Chinese artists in the Venice Biennale. In recent years many of these artists have made performances specifically for photography or film. Examples Some of the more extreme examples of Chinese performance art have become notorious in the West. In 2000, Zhu Yu, a painter and performance artist from Cheng Du, created a scandal by taking a number of photographs of himself, supposedly eating a foetus as a protest against state abortions as a means of population control. Concept 21
Concept 21 (Chinese: 觀念21), arguably the first artist collective of performance art in China, was formed in 1986 in Beijing by five students — Sheng Qi (盛奇), Zheng Yuke (鄭玉珂), Zhao Jianhai (趙建海), Kang Mu (康木), and Xi Jianjun (奚建軍). Formation Concept 21 was formed in 1986 in Beijing. The group's inception began with ''52 Hours of Unfolding Action'', a collective performance which was executed on December 23, 1986. At the time, a group of students from Peking University organized a spontaneous art festival, and Sheng Qi invited his peers to orchestrate a performance at the campus of the university. Great Wall Performance Enacted over the course of two days in May 1988, the collective executed a series of performances at the Great Wall of China by once again dressing in colourful strips of cloth around their bodies and head, similar to their attire in ''52 Hours of Unfolding Action''.
