Shanghai Chest Hospital
Shanghai Chest Hospital () is the first hospital in China specializing in cardiovascular systems, lung, esophagus, trachea and mediastinum. History Founded in Shanghai in 1866, St. Luke's Hospital () was merged with St. Elizabeth's Hospital () in 1942 to form St. Luke's & St. Elizabeth's Hospital (or Hongren Hospital, ). Both hospitals were sponsored by the Episcopal Church (United States), American Episcopal Church. Hongren Hospital was affiliated to the Shanghai Second Medical College in 1954. It was reorganised as Shanghai Chest Hospital in 1957. Huang Jiasi served as the first president, and the first vice-presidents were Lan Xichun and Gu Kaishi. In 1957, it was designated by Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, Ministry of Health as a national training center for cadio-vascular and chest surgery. Xuhui District
Xuhui District is a core urban district of Shanghai. It has a land area of and a population of 982,200 as of 2008. The Xuhui District is named after its namesake, the historic area of Xujiahui. Xujiahui was historically land owned by Ming dynasty bureaucrat and scientist Xu Guangqi, and later donated to the Roman Catholic Church. It and Luwan District jointly formed the core of Catholic Shanghai, centered in the former French Concession of Shanghai. Vestiges of the French influence can still be seen in the St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai, Xuhui College, the Xujiahui Observatory, and some remaining boulevards and French-style districts. Huang Jiasi
Huang Jiasi (; July 14, 1906 – May 14, 1984) was a Chinese cardiothoracic surgeon and medicinal educator, known for being the founder of biomedical engineering in the People's Republic of China and the editor of the first modern surgery textbook in the Chinese language. He was also the first Director-General of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering (CSBE). Huang joined the CPC in 1955. He was selected as the deputy to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th National People's Congress. Meanwhile, he was the member of the 5th and 6th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Lan Xichun (; 1907–1995) was a surgeon of general surgery and cardio-thoracic surgery. He did the first splenic-renal vein anastomotic operation in China. He improved the operation of cholelithiasis and laid the foundation of hepatobiliary surgery in China. He is also one of the pioneers of cardiovascular surgery. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU; ) is a public research university in Shanghai, China. The university is funded by the Ministry of Education of China. The university was established on April 8, 1896 as Nanyang Public School (南洋公學) by an imperial edict.
