Shalimar Class Ferry
Shalimar-class ferry is a series of three service watercraft built by Shalimar Works (1980) Ltd, Kolkata for the Indian Navy. The catamarans can carry up to 50 personnel. Each unit in this class is of double-hull catamaran-type and are made of steel. INS ''Neelam'', a vessel of this class was commissioned into the auxiliary fleet of the Indian Navy on 17 May 2014, at the Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) Kochi under the Southern Naval Command. The craft will be used for transportation of sailors and resources to ships at anchorage and other berths. The induction ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Southern Naval Command. In January 2016 it was reported that Shalimar Works has already handed over three vessels with a capacity of carrying 50 personnel to the Indian Navy. Shalimar Works (1980) Ltd. is a public sector shipbuilding company of West Bengal, India. It owns a small shipyard on the right bank of the Hooghly River at Shibpur, Howrah. The origin of shipyard can be traced back to 1885. Current activity and future plans The shipyard is capable of manufacturing small-size ships and can also engage medium-size ship for repairing. Its major work in the past involved repairing ships for the Kolkata Port Trust and fabricating vessels for the Tourism department and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In early 2012 it had orders for 15 auxiliary and service ships worth 250 crores from Indian Navy and were planned be serviced by 2018. Double Hull
A double hull is a ship hull design and construction method where the bottom and sides of the ship have two complete layers of watertight hull surface: one outer layer forming the normal hull of the ship, and a second inner hull which is some distance inboard, typically by a few feet, which forms a redundant barrier to seawater in case the outer hull is damaged and leaks. The space between the two hulls is sometimes used for storage of ballast water. Double hulls are a more extensive safety measure than double bottoms, which have two hull layers only in the bottom of the ship but not the sides. In low-energy collisions, double hulls can prevent flooding beyond the penetrated compartment. In high-energy collisions, however, the distance to the inner hull is not sufficient and the inner compartment is penetrated as well. Southern Naval Command
The Southern Naval Command is one of the three command-level formations of the Indian Navy. It has its headquarters in Kochi, Kerala at INS Venduruthy. It is the Training Command of the Indian Navy.
