GSL Class Ferries
GSL class of personnel ferries are series of six service craft built by state owned Goa Shipyard Limited, Vasco for Indian Navy. They are general purpose utility auxiliary watercraft used for transportation of personnel in harbour. The vessels stationed at Mumbai harbour are planned to be succeeded by Manoram class ferry. Goa Shipyard Limited
Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is an Indian Government owned ship building company located on the West Coast of India at Vasco da Gama, Goa. It was established in 1957, originally by the colonial government of the Portuguese in India as the "Estaleiros Navais de Goa", to build barges to be used in Goa's growing mining industry, which took off after the establishment of India's blockade of Goa in 1955. Vasco Da Gama, Goa
Vasco da Gama (), often shortened to Vasco, is a city in the state of Goa on the west coast of India. It is named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. It is the headquarters of the Mormugão taluka (subdistrict). The city lies on the western tip of the Mormugao peninsula, at the mouth of the Zuari River, about from Panaji, Goa's capital, from Margao, the district headquarters and about from Dabolim Airport. Shalimar Class Ferry
Shalimar-class ferry is a series of three service watercraft built by Shalimar Works (1980) Ltd, Kolkata for the Indian Navy. The catamarans can carry up to 50 personnel. Each unit in this class is of double-hull catamaran-type and are made of steel. INS ''Neelam'', a vessel of this class was commissioned into the auxiliary fleet of the Indian Navy on 17 May 2014, at the Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) Kochi under the Southern Naval Command. The craft will be used for transportation of sailors and resources to ships at anchorage and other berths. The induction ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Southern Naval Command. In January 2016 it was reported that Shalimar Works has already handed over three vessels with a capacity of carrying 50 personnel to the Indian Navy.
