Edwards reached the quarter-final of the singles in 2019 losing out to Les Gillett and the semi-final of the pairs in 2022. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship. The 2013 World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, in January 2013. The event was sponsored by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and was the 35th annual World Indoor Bowls Championships. The men's singles title was won by Stewart Anderson, while the ladies singles was won by Rebecca Field. The 2013 tournament saw the introduction of the shot clock, used for the first time at the World Championships. 2018 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2018 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship took place at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, on 12–28 January 2018. Mark Dawes and Robert Paxton reached the Open singles final with Dawes taking the title on a tie break. Dawes had been the player of the tournament. Katherine Rednall won her third singles title defeating Rebecca Field in the final. The seventh seeds Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney won the Open pairs final beating Nick Brett and Greg Harlow. Chestney missed the opportunity to win the first set with his last bowl but gained a three count to draw the set 6–6; the second set was won 9–5, helped by a decisive 5–0 count on end five. Chestney also won the Mixed Pairs title with Lesley Doig. The 2019 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 10–27 January 2019. The event is organised by the World Bowls Tour. Stewart Anderson won his second open singles title after defeating surprise qualifier Simon Skelton in the final. Julie Forrest of Scotland defeated Alison Merrien of Guernsey to win the women's singles. Alex Marshall and Paul Foster won the open pairs title for the fourth time as a pair and the sixth and fifth time respectively. Robert Paxton and Ellen Falkner won the mixed pairs event. 2020 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2020 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 9–26 January 2020. The event was organised by the World Bowls Tour and televised by the BBC. In the Open Singles, all 16 seeds progressed to round two, which last happened in 2009 but the top four seeds failed to make the semi final stage. Nick Brett progressed to the final and was attempting to become the first player in the history of the competition to achieve the treble of open singles, open pairs and mixed pairs during the same year. His opponent Robert Paxton (in his third career open singles final) started well in the first set before Brett took control of the set, winning it 10–7. Paxton deservedly took the second set 8-7 despite a late Brett comeback which forced the match into a tie break. 2021 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2021 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship took place at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 8–24 January 2021. The event was organised by the World Bowls Tour, televised by the BBC and streamed live on YouTube. The event was played behind closed doors and there was no under-25 competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence of the pandemic there were no overseas players involved. A fairer system was devised in the Open pairs whereby all competitors would face a first round match and there would be no byes. Late changes had to be made to the draw, with world number one and 2nd seed Nick Brett unable to participate because he broke his arm following an accident playing golf. Les Gillett
Leslie John Gillett (born 17 November 1970) is an English international indoor and lawn bowls player. He is nicknamed Razor. Bowls career Indoor career Gillett won the 2001 World Indoor Bowls Championship pairs title in Great Yarmouth with bowls partner Mark McMahon. Sixteen years later he won his second title when he won the Open pairs with Jason Greenslade at the 2017 World Indoor Bowls Championship in Great Yarmouth. At the 2022 World Indoor Bowls Championship, Gillett (as the sixth seed) finally won the Open singles title after defeating five-time champion Paul Foster in a tie-break set in the final. Gillett won the first set by virtue of overtaking Foster's lead during the final ends. Foster comfortably won the second set before Gillett won the tie break. Paul James Foster (born 13 March 1973) is a multiple world bowls champion who lives in Troon, Scotland. He plays at Troon Portland (Outdoor) & Ambassador Prestwick (Indoor) bowling clubs. Bowling career Indoor career Foster is the second most prolific winner of the World Indoor Championship singles title, behind six-times winner, pairs partner and close friend Alex Marshall. He has five wins from seven final appearances (in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2011 and 2017), with his two defeats coming in the 2013 final to Stewart Anderson and in the 2022 final to Les Gillett. In addition, Foster has won another eight world indoor titles, bringing his career record to 13. He has won the pairs five times, once with Hugh Duff in 2002 and four times with Alex Marshall (2011, 2012, 2013, and 2019). Mark Dawes
Mark Dawes (born 1983) is an English international lawn and indoor bowler and a four times world indoor champion. Bowls career He won the Men's National Junior title in 2005 at the National Championships. By 2014 he had reached a career high world indoor ranking of 8. In 2018 he won the World Indoor Open Pairs title with Jamie Chestney. and then followed this by taking the World Open Singles Championship, defeating Robert Paxton in a hard fought final. Dawes had been the player of the tournament and Paxton did well to take the final to a tie break. He was subsequently named as the singles first seed at the 2019 World Indoor Bowls Championship. In 2020 his indoor club Blackpool Newton Hall BC permanently closed and Dawes was forced to find a new club.
