Sarsfields GAA (Galway)
Sarsfields Galway is a GAA club consisting of the parish of Bullaun, New Inn and Woodlawn in East County Galway, Ireland. Winners of two All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship's. The club was founded in 1966 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. And in 2016 Sarsfields Hurling Club celebrated its 50th year. Sarsfields Galway were the first club to defend their All-Ireland Club Hurling title. In 1993 Sarsfields defeated opponents Kilmallock, County Limerick in their first All-Ireland club final. In 1994, Sarsfields retained their club title with a victory over Toomevara, County Tipperary. History Prior to 1966, two clubs St. Killians (of New Inn), and Bullaun existed in the parish. During 1966 a ruling known as "The Parish Rule" allowed only one club per parish, which forced the decision to amalgamate the two clubs together, thus Sarsfields Galway was affiliated in 1966. Bullaun, County Galway
Bullaun () is a village in east County Galway, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It lies 6 km northeast of Loughrea on the R350 road (Ireland), R350 Regional road (Ireland), regional road. It shares its parish with a village called New Inn, County Galway, New Inn. The townland of Lakafinna, to the south of Bullaun, contains the local water scheme and an old castle. According to local folklore, an unused tunnel runs from the castle to a point close to a house in Ballyara. The river which flows through Bullaun previously contained quantities of fresh water salmon. These salmon stocks have, however, been impacted by overfishing and pollution. The village also contains St Patrick's church, a pub called the Harbour Bar and is home to the Corcoran's Turoe stone. Athenry GAA
St. Mary's, Athenry is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. In men's competitions, the club is a dual club competing in both Gaelic football and hurling at various age levels. The club also competes in camogie competitions, and has won several county, province and national titles in the sport. History Athenry GAA club was founded in 1885. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the club fielded both Gaelic football and hurling teams. The club also participated in Gaelic handball, handball competitions. Darren Morrissey
Darren Morrissey (born 1999) is an Irish hurler who plays for Galway Senior Championship club Sarsfields and at inter-county level with the Galway senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a right corner-back. Playing career Sarsfields Morrissey joined the Sarsfields club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels. He made his first appearance for the club's senior team during the 2017 Galway Championship. Galway Minor Morrissey first played for Galway when he captained the minor team during the 2017 All-Ireland Championship. Michael McGrath (hurler)
Michael 'Hopper' McGrath (born 30 June 1963 in Bullaun, County Galway) is an Irish former sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Sarsfields and was a member of the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s. McGrath played for the Galway hurling team that was crowned All-Ireland Senior Hurling Champions in 1987 (defeating Kilkenny) and 1988 (defeating Tipperary.) McGrath was captain of the Sarsfields team when Sarsfields captured their second Galway Senior Hurling Championship title in 1989. Jimmy Cooney (born 28 July 1955) is an Irish former hurler who played as a left corner-back at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Bullaun, County Galway, Cooney first arrived on the inter-county scene when he made his senior debut in the 1979 championship. Cooney went on to play a key part for Galway for a brief period, and won one All-Ireland medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times, Cooney won one Railway Cup medal in 1980. At club level he is a one-time Connacht medallist with Sarsfields. Joseph Cooney (born 17 March 1965) is an Irish former hurler who played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Bullaun, County Galway, Cooney first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St Raphael's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1983 championship. Cooney immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won two All-Ireland medals, three Connacht medals and three National Hurling League medals. Kevin Hynes
Kevin Hynes (born 28 May 1986) is an Irish hurler who played as a full-back for the Galway senior team. Hynes made his first appearance for the team during the 2009 championship and eventually established himself as the first-choice full-back. An All-Ireland-winning captain in the under-21 grade, he has won Leinster and National Hurling League medals at senior level.
