Jimmy Cooney (Galway Hurler)
Jimmy Cooney (born 28 July 1955) is an Irish former hurler who played as a left corner-back at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Bullaun, County Galway, Cooney first arrived on the inter-county scene when he made his senior debut in the 1979 championship. Cooney went on to play a key part for Galway for a brief period, and won one All-Ireland medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times, Cooney won one Railway Cup medal in 1980. At club level he is a one-time Connacht medallist with Sarsfields. In addition to this he also won two championship medals. Throughout his career Cooney made 9 championship appearances. His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1982 championship. Sarsfields GAA (Galway)
Sarsfields Galway is a GAA club consisting of the parish of Bullaun, New Inn and Woodlawn in East County Galway, Ireland. Winners of two All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship's. The club was founded in 1966 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. And in 2016 Sarsfields Hurling Club celebrated its 50th year. Sarsfields Galway were the first club to defend their All-Ireland Club Hurling title. In 1993 Sarsfields defeated opponents Kilmallock, County Limerick in their first All-Ireland club final. In 1994, Sarsfields retained their club title with a victory over Toomevara, County Tipperary. History Prior to 1966, two clubs St. Killians (of New Inn), and Bullaun existed in the parish. Athenry GAA
St. Mary's, Athenry is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. In men's competitions, the club is a dual club competing in both Gaelic football and hurling at various age levels. The club also competes in camogie competitions, and has won several county, province and national titles in the sport. History Athenry GAA club was founded in 1885. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the club fielded both Gaelic football and hurling teams. The club also participated in Gaelic handball, handball competitions. The GAA Hurling Intermediate All-Ireland Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Effectively contested by the second string teams of the top inter-county hurling sides in Ireland, the tournament has taken place every year since 1997—having originally been run between 1961 and 1973. Johnny Flaherty
Johnny Flaherty (born 1949 in Kinnitty, County Offaly) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Kinnitty and with the Offaly senior inter-county team in the 1970s and 1980s. Playing career Club Flaherty played his club hurling with his local club Kinnitty and enjoyed much success. His skill at the game became apparent from as early as 1957 when he won his first juvenile hurling medal with the club. Flaherty made his senior debut for the club at the age of seventeen, as well as playing at minor and under-21 levels. In 1966 he won a county junior title with the club before going on to win senior county titles in 1967, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1984 and 1985. Damien Martin
Damien Martin (born 2 October 1946) is an Irish former hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Offaly senior hurling team. Born in Banagher, County Offaly, Martin first arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Offaly minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. Martin made his senior debut during the 1964–65 National League and later became a regular member of the team. During a career that spanned three decades he won one All-Ireland medal and three Leinster medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team at various times, Martin won three Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a three-time Leinster medallist with St Rynagh's. Conor Hayes
Conor Hayes (born 11 May 1958) is an Irish former hurler who played as a full-back at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Kiltormer, County Galway, Hayes first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty he joined the Galway under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1979 championship. Hayes went on to play a key role for Galway for over a decade, and won three All-Ireland medals and two National Hurling League medals. Éamonn Cregan
Éamonn Cregan (born 21 May 1945) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer, hurler and manager. He is best remembered for his success with Limerick, as a player in the 1970s and then as manager of various club and inter-county teams in the 1980s and 1990s. Cregan was inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame in 2013. Playing career Club Cregan played his club hurling and football with his local club in Claughaun and enjoyed much success.
