Athenry GAA
St. Mary's, Athenry is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. In men's competitions, the club is a dual club competing in both Gaelic football and hurling at various age levels. The club also competes in camogie competitions, and has won several county, province and national titles in the sport. History Athenry GAA club was founded in 1885. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the club fielded both Gaelic football and hurling teams. The club also participated in Gaelic handball, handball competitions. While camogie was played locally from at least the 1920s, Athenry's camogie club was formally established in 1973. Hurling The club contested its first county final in 1977. The 1978 All-Ireland Senior Club Camogie Championship for the leading clubs in the women's team field sport of camogie was won bBallyagranof Limerick, who defeated Buffers Alley from Wexford in the final, played at Monamolin. That was the last club final to be played with the second crossbar, the "points bar," as per the rules of the game as amended by Congress in 1929. Arrangements The championship was organised on the traditional provincial system used in Gaelic Games since the 1880s, with Portglenone defeating Swatragh in the Ulster final (with former Ahane player Vera Mackey on their side) and Athenry winning the Connacht championship. In Munster Ballyagran defeated Éire Óg from Cork and then got a bye from the Tipperary champions. Brian Hanley
Brian Hanley (born 1974) is an Irish hurling coach and former who played as a midfielder for the Athenry senior hurling team. Hanley enjoyed a successful playing career at club level with Athenry at the height of their power throughout the nineties. He was a midfielder with that team and collected three All-Ireland medals, seven Connacht medals and seven county club championship medals. In retirement from playing, Hanley has become involved in team management. At club level, he has served as manager and assistant with the Liam Mellows and Garrycastle senior teams. Hanley was appointed manager of the Westmeath senior hurling team in April 2011. Jarlath Cloonan
Jarlath Cloonan (born 1953 in Athenry, County Galway) was the County Galway Senior Hurling Manager, 1994-96. A former selector, Cloonan played a key role as Athenry won three All-Ireland club titles. Eugene Cloonan
Eugene Cloonan (born 22 December 1978) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a full-forward for the Galway senior team. Born in Athenry, County Galway, Cloonan first played competitive hurling whilst at school at Athenry Vocational School. He arrived on the Inter-County scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 1997 championship. Cloonan went on to play a key part for Galway for over a decade, and won three Connacht medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times, Cloonan won one Railway Cup medals in 1999. The Galway Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition between the top Gaelic football clubs in Galway.
