Joe Cooney
Joseph Cooney (born 17 March 1965) is an Irish former hurler who played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Galway county team. Born in Bullaun, County Galway, Cooney first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St Raphael's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1983 championship. Cooney immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won two All-Ireland medals, three Connacht medals and three National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on four occasions. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Cooney won four Railway Cup medal. At club level he is a two-time All-Ireland medallist with Sarsfields. In addition to this he has also won three Connacht medals and five championship medals. Sarsfields GAA (Galway)
Sarsfields Galway is a GAA club consisting of the parish of Bullaun, New Inn and Woodlawn in East County Galway, Ireland. Winners of two All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship's. The club was founded in 1966 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. And in 2016 Sarsfields Hurling Club celebrated its 50th year. Sarsfields Galway were the first club to defend their All-Ireland Club Hurling title. In 1993 Sarsfields defeated opponents Kilmallock, County Limerick in their first All-Ireland club final. In 1994, Sarsfields retained their club title with a victory over Toomevara, County Tipperary. History Prior to 1966, two clubs St. Killians (of New Inn), and Bullaun existed in the parish. He currently lines out as a left wing-back. Personal life Born in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Cooney was born into a strong hurling family. His father, Joe, and his uncle, Jimmy, both played with Galway and won All-Ireland medals with the Galway senior team of the 1980s. Playing career St Brigid's College Cooney first came to prominence as a hurler with St Brigid's College in Loughrea. Having played in every grade he was appointed captain of the senior team in his final year. On 13 April 2009, Cooney captained the team to the All-Ireland Championship after lining out at midfield in the 3-18 to 1-14 defeat of Roscrea Community School. All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Minor Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Electric Ireland GAA Hurling All-Ireland Minor Championship) is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players under the age of 17 in Ireland and has been contested every year - except for a three-year absence during the Emergency - since 1928. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Irish Press Cup. Ballyhale Shamrocks is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the parish of Ballyhale in County Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland. The club was founded in 1972 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. Ballyhale Shamrocks are the most successful club in the history of the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship with eight titles. Hurling History Beginnings Gaelic Games had been played in the parish of Ballyhale long before the Shamrocks club was established. By the early 1970s there were two competing clubs in existence in the parish, Ballyhale and Knocktopher, however, they were both facing extinction. A third club, Knockmoylan, had ceased to exist at some time in 1959. Because of the situation facing both clubs they decided to amalgamate in 1972 under the new name of Ballyhale Shamrocks.
