Santa Maria Assunta, also dedicated to ''San Vittore'', is a baroque-style, Roman Catholic parish church located in the town of Calcinate, province of Bergamo, region of Lombardy, Italy. History The church was designed by Filippo Juvarra and with a convex marble facade by Anton Maria Pirovano. The skyline of the facade and bell-tower is populated by an ebullient crowd of statues. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. It reached its peak in the High Baroque (1625–1675), when it was used in churches and palaces in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Bavaria and Austria. In the Late Baroque period (1675–1750), it reached as far as Russia and the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in Latin America. Anton Maria Pirovano
Anton Maria Pirovano (active 1720–1770) was an Italian sculptor, painter, and architect, active in a late baroque style, around Bergamo in the region of Lombardy. Biography He first trained under his father, the sculptor Pier Paolo Pirovano. His father was born in Viganò, but moved in 1698 to Sforzatica, and in 1705 to Pignolo. Anton Maria also worked for some time in Milan with his father, sculpting reliefs for the cloister of San Paolo d’Argon, and in the restoration of the façade of the parish church of Solza. His major works were sculptures atop the facades of churches of San Rocco in Treviglio and the Beata Vergine dello Spasimo (Santa Lucia) in Bergamo. Francesco Coghetti (12 July 1801 – 20 April 1875) was an Italian painter and art school administrator. Biography He was born to a wealthy family which enabled him to be educated at prestigious private schools. After completing his primary studies, he enrolled at the Accademia Carrara, where he studied with Giuseppe Diotti. In 1818, he won the Accademia's drawing competition. In 1820, he moved to Milan. The following year, he won an award for drawing and design from the Brera Academy. This encouraged him to move to Rome and, thanks to his father's financial support, he was able to study with Vincenzo Camuccini. He also enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Angelo Mai, who was a fellow Bergamaschi. In 1825, he was married. The 1830s were a very successful time for him, during which he won several awards and received a continual flow of commissions from all over Europe.
