Sangam World Centre
Sangam World Centre is one of the five World Centres of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), located on the banks of the Mula River in Pune. The word Sangam means ‘coming together’ in the ancient language of Sanskrit. The centre serves as a place for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world to come together to share their experiences, as well as the culture and traditions of their homelands and Member Organizations. Four other WAGGGS World Centers are Our Chalet in Switzerland, Our Cabaña in Mexico, Pax Lodge in England, and Kusafiri in Africa. Location The Sangam World Centre is situated 190 km (120 mi) from Mumbai, in the state of Maharashtra, India. Mula River, India
The Mula is a river in Pune, India. It is dammed near the Western Ghats at the Mulshi Dam that forms the Mulshi Lake. Further downstream, in Pune city, it merges with the Pawana River on the left bank and Mutha River on the right bank to form the Mula-Mutha river, which later meets the Bhima River. The river forms the boundary between the limits of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and the Pune Municipal Corporation.This river goes from center of Pune city. Olave Baden-Powell
Olave St Clair Baden-Powell, Baroness Baden-Powell (''née'' Soames; 22 February 1889 – 25 June 1977) was the first Chief Guide for Britain and the wife of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting and co-founder of Girl Guides. She outlived her husband, who was 32 years her senior, by over 35 years. Lady Baden-Powell became Chief Guide for Britain in 1918. Later the same year, at the Swanwick conference for Commissioners in October, she was presented with a gold Silver Fish, one of only two ever made. She was elected World Chief Guide in 1930. Lakhshmi Mazumdar
Lakshmi Mazumdar of Delhi was the National Commissioner of the Indian Scouting organization Bharat Scouts and Guides from November 1964 to April 1983, and supervised the construction of the Sangam World Girl Guide/Girl Scout Centre, which was inaugurated on 16 October 1966 by the World Chief Guide, Lady Olave Baden-Powell. Mazumdar joined Guiding at a very young age in 1922. After India's independence, she held increasingly high responsibilities. In 1969 Mazumdar was awarded the ''Bronze Wolf'', the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting. Kusafiri
Kusafiri is one of the five world centres of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It is based in Africa but has no fixed location, instead it moves around existing locations in different African countries. In October 2015, the name Kusafiri was given to the fifth world centre. Kusafiri means 'to journey' in Swahili. History Kusafiri World Center is the product of years of discussion to bring a World Centre experience to the Africa Region. In 2010, at the Africa Regional Conference, it was unanimously agreed that the Africa Committee would explore opportunities to deliver World Centre experiences in the Region. Pax Lodge
Pax Lodge is the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Centres in Hampstead, London, England. It was opened on 15 March 1991, preceded by ''Olave House'' (1959–1988), named after Olave Baden-Powell (World Chief Guide and wife of Robert Baden-Powell who founded the Scouting movement) which was preceded by ''Our Ark'' (1939–1959). The new World Centre was named 'Pax Lodge' as a tribute to the Baden-Powells. The Latin word for peace, ''pax'', was present in the names of their homes in England and Paxtu in Kenya. The name also highlights the importance of peace in the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting movement. Our foundation stone was unveiled in 1988 by The Honourable Mrs Betty Clay, Lord and Lady Baden-Powell’s daughter.
