Sainte-Marie was a provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada. It corresponded to the Sainte-Marie neighbourhood and eastern Ville-Marie in Montreal. It was created for the 1966 election from parts of Montréal–Sainte-Marie, Montréal–Saint-Jacques and Maisonneuve electoral districts. Its final election was in 1985. Montreal is one of the administrative regions of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is also a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and a census division (CD), for both of which its geographical code is 66. Prior to the merger of the municipalities in ''Region 06'' in 2002, the administrative region was co-extensive with the Montreal Urban Community. Sainte-Marie, Montreal
The Sainte-Marie neighbourhood is located in the eastern edge of the Centre-Sud in the borough of Ville-Marie. The Jacques Cartier Bridge and Maison Radio-Canada overlook the neighbourhood. History Prior to the construction of the Maison Radio-Canada, the area was part of the working-class neighborhood popularly known as Faubourg à m'lasse, demolished in the 1960s. Sainte-Marie, and the Centre-Sud more broadly, have a long held reputation for poverty, organized crime and prostitution casting the neighbourhood in a negative light. This has notably changed in recent years, with increased gentrification. Ville-Marie is the name of a borough (''arrondissement'') in the centre of Montreal, Quebec. The borough is named after Fort Ville-Marie, the French settlement that would later become Montreal (now Old Montreal), which was located within the present-day borough. Old Montreal is a National Historic Site of Canada. 1966 Quebec General Election
The 1966 Quebec general election was held on June 5, 1966, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The Union Nationale (UN), led by Daniel Johnson, Sr, defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage. In terms of the number of seats won, the election was one of the closest in recent history, with the UN winning 56 seats to the Liberals' 50. Generally, Quebec's first past the post electoral system tends to produce strong disparities in the number of seats won even if the popular vote is fairly close. In this case, the most popular party did not win the most seats in the chamber. The Liberals won 6.5% more votes, but were denied a third term because the rural part of the province, where the Union Nationale did well, were slightly over-represented in the legislature.
