Montréal–Sainte-Marie
Montréal–Sainte-Marie was a former provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1912 election from part of Montréal division no. 1 electoral district. Its final election was in 1962. It disappeared in the 1966 election and its successor electoral district was Sainte-Marie. Camillien Houde
Camillien Houde (August 13, 1889 – September 11, 1958) was a Quebec politician, a Member of Parliament, and a four-time mayor of Montreal – one of the few Canadian politicians to have served at all three levels of government. Political career Houde was born in Montreal on August 13, 1889 and died there on September 11, 1958. He was nicknamed "''l'imprévisible''"—the unpredictable. He was the only surviving child of Azade Houde and Josephine Frenette. He is descended from the first Houde ancestor, Louis Houde, who came from Manou, Eure-et-Loir, France to New France in 1647. Louis Houde's son was Louis H. who married Marie Lemay in 1685. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a member of the Conservative Party for the riding of Montréal–Sainte-Marie in the 1923 election. Joseph Gauthier (Quebec MLA)
Joseph Gauthier (March 11, 1877 – June 27, 1934) was a politician Quebec, Canada and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec (MLA). Early life He was born on March 11, 1877, in Montreal, the son of Édouard Gauthier and Célina Richard. He became a typographer and a union activist. Gauthier worked at ''L'Étendard'' and then '' La Patrie''. In 1899, he married Mélina Bourgeois. Political career He ran as a Labour candidate in the district of Montréal–Sainte-Marie in a by-election held on December 22, 1921, and won. Gauthier was defeated by Conservative candidate Camillien Houde in the 1923 provincial election. Gauthier defeated Houde and was re-elected as a Liberal in 1927 provincial election. His election was declared void in 1927. Sainte-Marie was a provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada. It corresponded to the Sainte-Marie neighbourhood and eastern Ville-Marie in Montreal. It was created for the 1966 election from parts of Montréal–Sainte-Marie, Montréal–Saint-Jacques and Maisonneuve electoral districts. Its final election was in 1985. The 1912 Quebec general election was held on May 15, 1912, to elect members of the 13th Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. Gaspard Fauteux, (August 27, 1898 – March 29, 1963) was a Canadian parliamentarian, Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada (1945–1949), and the 19th Lieutenant Governor of Quebec (1950–1958). He was born in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, to a political family. His grandfather, Honoré Mercier and his uncle, Lomer Gouin, were both former Premiers of Quebec. His grandmother's second husband was Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) and later Senator Joseph Godbout. His brother was the judge Gérald Fauteux. Fauteux married Marguerite Barré, daughter of the Canadian artist and animator Raoul Barré, on September 18, 1923. The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959. The party was often referred to in English as the National Union, especially when it was still an electoral force, by both the media and, at times, the party.
