Sabrina De Leeuw (born 19 August 1974) is a retired Belgian high jumper. She won the 1993 European Junior Championships, and the gold medal at the 1997 Jeux de la Francophonie, She also competed at the 1993 World Championships without reaching the final. She was given the Golden Spike Award in 1993. She became Belgian champion in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Her main domestic competitor was Natalja Jonckheere, before Tia Hellebaut took over the hegemony. De Leeuw also became French champion in 1998 and 2000. High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. Athletics At The 1997 Jeux De La Francophonie
At the 1997 Jeux de la Francophonie, the athletics events were held in Antananarivo, Madagascar in August and September 1997. A total of 43 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 20 by female athletes. Of the forty nations present at the competition, fifteen reached the medal table in the athletics competition. The regional leader France easily topped the medal table with eleven gold medals and 38 in total. This was almost twice as many as second placed Canada (seven golds and twenty altogether). The hosts Madagascar had a strong showing in third place with seven golds and 16 medals – a performance which helped it into second place in the medals at the games. Golden Spike Award (Belgium)
The Gouden Spike ( en, Golden Spike) is the most important athletics prize in Belgium, first awarded in 1954. Until 1987, the prize was alternated between track and field disciplines to tha athlete with the best performance of the last two years among the athletes who never won the prize; because it was only possible to win the prize once. Since 1974, for the first time also an award for female athletes was added. Since 1988 the best male and female athlete and also the best male and female Belgian young talent of the year are elected. Natalja Jonckheere (born 21 October 1970) is a retired Belgian high jumper. She finished ninth at the 1988 World Junior Championships, tenth at the 1989 European Indoor Championships. twelfth at the 1989 World Indoor Championships, ninth at the 1995 World Indoor Championships and tenth at the 1998 European Indoor Championships. She also competed at the 1994 European Championships and the 1995 World Championships without reaching the final. She became Belgian champion in 1988, 1991, 1994 and 1995. Tia Hellebaut (; born 16 February 1978 in Antwerp) is a retired Belgian track and field athlete, as well as a chemist, who started out in her sports career in the heptathlon, and afterwards specialized in the high jump event. She has cleared 2.05 metres both indoors and outdoors. Hellebaut was the 2008 Olympic champion in the high jump. She was previously the European Champion in 2006 and then the European Indoor Champion in 2007. She won the gold medal in the pentathlon at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships. In addition to these medals, she has participated at the World Championships in Athletics on four occasions.
