Rugby Africa Cup
The Rugby Africa Cup is a two-year men's rugby union tournament involving the top 16 African nations based on their World Rugby rankings, it is organised by Rugby Africa. The tournament was first held in 2000. It was renamed the Rugby Africa Cup in November 2019, it was previously called the Africa Cup since 2006, the CAR Top 9 and CAR Top 10. Due to South Africa being far stronger than any other African nation, South African teams have only competed five times, and won the competition three times. The winning South African teams on these occasions were the under 23 or amateur players (in 2005, 2006 and 2007). Rugby Union
Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. 2000 Africa Cup
The 2000 Africa Cup (officially called at those time "Africa Top Six") was the first edition of highest level rugby union tournament in Africa. Only five teams were involved due to the withdrawal of the Ivory Coast. South Africa participated with an Under-23 amateurs team. The teams were divided in two pool played on home away basis. 2005 Africa Cup
The 2005 Africa Cup (Official name "Top 9") was the 6th edition of the continental rugby union tournament arranged by Confederation of African Rugby (CAR). It was won by Morocco, that defeated Madagascar in the final. The final was played at the "Stade de France" before the match between France and South Africa match of the 2005 South Africa rugby union tour of Argentina and Europe. The match was arranged in that venue, due to participation of South African Amateurs selection, who were surprisingly defeated in the semifinal by Madagascar. 2004 Africa Cup
The 2004 Africa Cup (officially called "Africa Top ten" at the time) was the fifth edition of top level rugby union tournament in Africa. Ten teams were admitted, but Tunisia withdrew. The final was played in 2004, due to the participation of Namibia to the 2003 Rugby World Cup tournament. The teams were divided into two zones, North and South. The North Zone contained four teams in a round robin pool. In South Zone, the six teams were divided in two pools, with a "Zone final" between the winner of each pool. At the end a 2004 CAR Development Trophy, second division was also played as "CAR Development".
