Route 51 (Missouri)
Route 51 is a highway in southeastern Missouri. Its northern terminus is the Illinois state line near Chester, Illinois; its southern terminus is at the Arkansas state line northwest of Piggott, Arkansas. It continues into Illinois as Illinois Route 150 and it continues into Arkansas as Highway 139. Chester, Illinois
Chester is a city in and the county seat of Randolph County, Illinois, United States, on a bluff above the Mississippi River. The population was 6,814 at the 2020 census. It lies south of St. Louis, Missouri. History Founding Samuel Smith is said to be the town's founder because he built the first home in Chester, established a ferry system, and began the construction of a mill in 1829. The town was named after Chester, England, the city from where his wife Jane Smith was from. The first business in Chester was a general store that opened in 1830 along with a castor oil press established by R. B. Servant, who furnished farmers with seed and growing methods to later buy the beans they produced for oil extraction. This was a flourishing business until the petroleum industry made it obsolete. Piggott, Arkansas
Piggott is a city in Clay County, Arkansas, United States. It is one of the two county seats of Clay County, along with Corning. It is the northern terminus of the Arkansas segment of the Crowley's Ridge Parkway, a National Scenic Byway. As of the 2010 census, Piggott's population was 3,849. The town was named after James A. Piggott, one of the early settlers and initiator of the local post office. Geography Piggott is located in eastern Clay County on the eastern edge of Crowley's Ridge. It runs from the Chester Bridge, a truss bridge over the Mississippi River to Route 51 in the state of Missouri, to IL 154 in rural Perry County well west of Pinckneyville. Highway 139 (AR 139, Ark. 139, and Hwy. 139) is a designation for two north–south state highways in the Upper Arkansas Delta. One route of begins at Highway 158 in Caraway and runs north to Missouri Supplemental Route F at the Missouri state line. A second route of runs from US Highway 412 (US 412) to Missouri Route 51 at the Missouri state line. Both routes are maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Advance is a city located at the intersection of State Highway 25 and State Highway 91/Route C in northern Stoddard County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,347 at the 2010 census. Advance was founded ''circa'' 1882. The town is pronounced ''ADD-vance''. History Advance had its start in 1910 when the railroad was extended to that point. Chester Bridge
The Chester Bridge is a continuous truss bridge connecting Missouri's Route 51 (Missouri), Route 51 with Illinois Route 150 across the Mississippi River between Perryville, Missouri and Chester, Illinois. It is the only motor-traffic bridge spanning the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Missouri. History Located at river mile marker 109.5, the Chester Bridge is a two-lane traffic truss bridge which was constructed by Sverdrup and Parcel and Associates, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri. Construction began in 1941 and was finished in 1942 at a cost of $1.385 million (1942 dollars). The bridge opened on August 23, 1942, and operated as a toll bridge until January 1, 1989. The main span was destroyed by a severe tornadic force thunderstorm on July 29, 1944, and reconstructed 2 years later. The bridge serves about 6,400 vehicles per day.
