Rosa 'Scentimental'
''Rosa'' 'Scentimental' is a red and white striped Floribunda rose, created by Tom Carruth in 1996. The rose was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1997. Description 'Scentimental' is a compact bushy shrub, 3 to 5 ft (91-152 cm) in height, with a 3 to 4 ft (91-121 cm) spread. Blooms have an average diameter of 4 to 5 inches (10-12 cm) and can have more than 40 petals. 'Scentimental' blooms continuously from spring to fall, with small clusters of very fragrant, red and white striped petals. It has large, semi-glossy, medium green foliage. It is a repeat bloomer, and produces its best flowers and richest colors in cooler temperatures. The plant is known to be heat tolerant. Floribunda (rose)
Floribunda (Latin for "many-flowering") is a modern group of garden roses that was developed by crossing hybrid teas with polyantha roses, the latter being derived from crosses between '' Rosa chinensis'' and '' Rosa multiflora'' (sometimes called ''R. polyantha'').Phillips, R. and Rix, M., ''The Ultimate Guide to Roses'', Macmillan, 2004, p226 The idea was to create roses that bloomed with the polyantha profusion, but with hybrid tea floral beauty and colour range. Tom Carruth
Tom Carruth is an American rose hybridizer, who has created more than 100 rose varieties, including eleven All-America Rose Selections (AARS). He is currently the E.L. and Ruth B. Shannon Curator of the Rose Collections at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. Early life and education Carruth's first fifteen years were spent in Pampa, Texas. He knew at an early age that he wanted a career working with flowers. To earn spending money, Carruth sold seeds from the Burpee seed company to local residents. When he was sixteen, Carruth and his family moved to Irving, Texas, where he discovered a passion for plant biology. "When his teacher lectured on genetics and mentioned plant breeders, Carruth says, 'I knew I was on my way.'" Carruth attended the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. All-America Rose Selections
The All-America Rose Selections (AARS) is an award that was given annually, from 1940 to 2013, by the American rose industry to an outstanding new rose variety. The AARS selection was regarded as the most prestigious rose prize in the United States for 73 years. AARS was discontinued after 2013, and was replaced in 2016 by the new American Garden Rose Selections (AGRS) program. History In 1938, W. Anne Cocker
Anne Cocker (born Anne Gowen Rennis; 25 May 1920 – 21 November 2014) was a Scottish rose breeder from Aberdeen, Scotland. Cocker and her husband, Alexander Morison Cocker, were owners of the nursery, James Cocker & Sons. From the 1960s to the 2000s, the Cockers introduced more than 100 new rose varieties. Cocker continued to breed roses until her eighties, winning multiple horticultural awards. Early life Cocker was born on 25 May 1920, in a tenement in Aberdeen, Scotland, the daughter of John and Barbara Rennie. Her father worked as a granite mason and draughtsman.
