Rocky Point is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in southern Pender County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocky Point is situated on North Carolina Highway 210, North Carolina Highway 133 and U.S. Route 117, at an elevation of 39 feet (12 m). The ZIP Code for Rocky Point is 28457. Overview Rocky Point is located at exit 408 off of Interstate 40. Rocky Point is just a two-stop-light town (three, counting the one off I-40). The community is growing fairly rapidly. Land taxes are low, and the community is served by the Rocky Point Fire Department, Pender EMS and Fire, and the Pender County Sheriff's Office. AMP Energy 500
The YellaWood 500 is a NASCAR Cup Series stock car race held at Talladega Superspeedway in Lincoln, Alabama, hosting an event in the NASCAR playoffs. The race is one of four NASCAR Cup Series races currently run with tapered spacers, the others being the GEICO 500 in May, the Coke Zero Sugar 400, and the Daytona 500. Through 1996, this race was normally held in early August or late July. In 1997, it was moved to early October due to the uncomfortably hot summer temperatures, and sometimes unpredictable summertime thunderstorms in the Alabama area. In 2009, the race moved again, this time to November 1 as part of a realignment agreement with Atlanta and Fontana (where Fontana earned a race in the Chase and Atlanta gained the Labor Day weekend race). Richard Brickhouse
Richard Brickhouse (born October 27, 1939 in Rocky Point, North Carolina) is a retired NASCAR driver. He is best known for winning the inaugural Talladega 500 The GEICO 500 is a NASCAR Cup Series stock car race held at the Talladega Superspeedway in Lincoln, Alabama. The race is usually held in April or May. The 1997 event stands as the fastest NASCAR race to date ever run with an average speed of ... in 1969 after a boycott of the top stars of the sport at the time because concerns with tire wear with the high rate of speeds at the racetrack. Though Brickhouse ran his final race in 1982, he did attempt a comeback in 1995 at age 55 at Rockingham driving for former driver Dick Skillen. William Shepperd Ashe
William Shepperd Ashe (August 12, 1813September 14, 1862) was a Democratic U.S. Representative from North Carolina between 1849 and 1855. Biography Born in Rocky Point, North Carolina in 1813, Ashe attended school in Fayetteville and pursued classical studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Ashe engaged in rice cultivation and studied law; he was admitted to the state bar in 1836 and practiced in New Hanover County. Active in the Democratic Party, Ashe was a presidential elector in 1844 and was elected to the North Carolina Senate for a term of two years (1846–1848). In 1848, he was sent to the U.S. House, serving in the 31st, 32nd, and 33rd Congresses (March 4, 1849 – March 3, 1855). During the 32nd Congress, Ashe chaired the Committee on Elections. He did not run again in 1854 but served as the president of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad Company from 1854 until his death. John Baptista Ashe (representative)
John Baptista Ashe (1810December 29, 1857), was an American slave owner, lawyer and the nephew of the Revolutionary War veteran John Baptista Ashe, who served as a U.S. Congressman for Tennessee for one term (1843–1845). Biography Ashe was born in Rocky Point, Pender County, North Carolina, in 1810. He attended Fayetteville Academy and was in the 1830 class of Trinity College (then called Washington College), Hartford, Connecticut, but for unknown reasons did not receive his diploma until 1844. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1832. Career Ashe then moved to Tennessee and commenced practice in Brownsville. As of the 1840 census, he owned eight slaves.
