Richard Wood (diplomat)
Richard Wood is a British diplomat, who served as the British Ambassador to Norway from 2018 to 2023. Early life Richard John Wood was born on 27 August 1967 in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Wood is the son of John Michael Wood and Christine Barbara Wood. Wood was educated at Lynn Grove High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College. Wood attended Leeds Polytechnic, graduating with a BA (Hons) in European languages and institutions in 1990. Career Wood joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1990. His first role was as Desk Officer for the Single Market, European Presidency, and Gibraltar. His first foreign posting was as the Second Secretary for internal politics in Cape Town and Pretoria. During his first posting Wood was outed as homosexual to the FCO Security Department by colleagues, and was sent back to Britain and told to expect dismissal. Jan Thompson (born 25 August 1965 in Bexleyheath) is a British diplomat, who since April 2023 has served as the British Ambassador to Norway. She served previously as British Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2013 to 2017, and as British Deputy High Commissioner to India from 2018 to 2023. Career Thompson attended Durham University where she studied French and German. She spent two years working for the BBC and then joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1990. She started her career as desk officer for El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica at the Latin America Department, was seconded in 1991 to serve in the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and had her first posting as second secretary (political) at the British Embassy in Bonn and Berlin from 1992 to 1994. Norwegian ( no, norsk, links=no ) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is an official language. Basra ( ar, ٱلْبَصْرَة, al-Baṣrah) is an Iraqi city located on the Shatt al-Arab. It had an estimated population of 1.4 million in 2018.
