Pforzheim Central Station
Pforzheim Hauptbahnhof is the main station in the city of Pforzheim in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. History The first Pforzheim station was opened on the 3 July 1861 on the Karlsruhe–Mühlacker railway by the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (''Großherzoglich Badische Staatseisenbahnen''). With the opening of the Enz Valley Railway (''Enztalbahn'') to Wildbad (11 June 1868) and the Nagold Valley Railway (''Nagoldtalbahn'') to Horb (1 June 1874), Pforzheim developed into an interchange station with considerable traffic. Both lines were operated by the Royal Württemberg State Railways (''Königlich Württembergischen Staats-Eisenbahnen'') and they received their own platform tracks to the west of the station. The station building was built in 1861 in the neoclassical style and consisted of a long, single-storey central building with two-story wings at right-angles at each end. Bombing Of Pforzheim In World War II
During the latter stages of World War II, Pforzheim, a town in southwestern Germany, was bombed several times. The largest raid, one of the most devastating area bombardments of the war, was carried out by the Royal Air Force (RAF) on the evening of February 23, 1945. Some 17,600 people, or 31.4% of the town's population, were killed. About 83% of the town's buildings were destroyed, two-thirds of the complete area of Pforzheim and between 80% and 100% of the inner city. Minor raids The first Allied air raid on Pforzheim took place on April 1, 1944 when an attack by United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) bombers caused comparatively minor damage and killed 95 people. Further attacks by the USAAF followed, the largest on 24 December. Another on 21 January 1945 caused 56 casualties. The RAF also carried out several nighttime nuisance raids on Pforzheim and other towns with de Havilland Mosquito light bombers. In rail terminology, a through coach is a passenger car (coach) that is re-marshalled during the course of its journey. It begins the journey attached to one train, and arrives at its destination attached to another train. Through coaches save their transit passengers the need to change trains themselves. Orient-Express
The ''Orient Express'' was a long-distance passenger train service created in 1883 by the Belgian company ''Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits'' (CIWL) that operated until 2009. The train traveled the length of continental Europe and into western Asia, with terminal stations in Paris and London in the northwest and Athens or Istanbul in the southeast. The route and rolling stock of the ''Orient Express'' changed many times. Several routes in the past concurrently used the ''Orient Express'' name, or slight variations. Railway platform height is the built height – ''above top of rail (ATR)'' – of passenger platforms at stations. A connected term is ''train floor height'', which refers to the ATR height of the floor of rail vehicles. Worldwide, there are many, frequently incompatible, standards for platform heights and train floor heights. Where raised platforms are in use, train widths must also be compatible, in order to avoid both large gaps between platform and trains and mechanical interference liable to cause equipment damage.
