''Poet in New York'' (in Spanish, ''Poeta en Nueva York'') is one of the most important works of Spanish author Federico García Lorca. It is a body of poems composed during the visit of the poet to Columbia University in New York in the years 1929/1930. During his stay, the stock market crashed in October 1929, an event which profoundly affected his poetic vision. After his stay in New York, Lorca traveled to Cuba, where he wrote one of the poems included in the book, "Son de negros en Cuba", before returning to Spain. The book was not published until 1940, after Lorca's death. Due to Franco's dictatorship, it was originally released in Mexico and the United States (translated by Rolfe Humphries). Federico García Lorca
Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca (5 June 1898 – 19 August 1936), known as Federico García Lorca ( ), was a Spanish poet, playwright, and theatre director. García Lorca achieved international recognition as an emblematic member of the Generation of '27, a group consisting mostly of poets who introduced the tenets of European movements (such as symbolism, futurism, and surrealism) into Spanish literature. He initially rose to fame with '' Romancero gitano'' (''Gypsy Ballads'', 1928), a book of poems depicting life in his native Andalusia. His poetry incorporated traditional Andalusian motifs and avant-garde styles. The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the Great Crash, was a major American stock market crash that occurred in the autumn of 1929. It started in September and ended late in October, when share prices on the New York Stock Exchange collapsed.
