Picos is located 4 km southeast of Assomada and 23 km northwest of the capital city of Praia, near the national road from Praia to Tarrafal, Cape Verde, Tarrafal via Assomada (EN1-ST01). Picos is surrounded by mountains, and lies about 4 km north of the highest peak of the island of Santiago, Pico de Antónia. The Instituto Nacional de Estatística (Portuguese for the ''National Statistics Institute'', abbreviated as INE) is the Official statistics, public statistics institute of Cape Verde. Its current president is Osvaldo Rui Monteiro dos Reis Borges. The population censuses are held every first year of a decade; the most recent was in 2010.
