Pholidosaurid
Pholidosauridae is an extinct family of aquatic neosuchian mesoeucrocodylian crocodylomorphs. Fossils have been found in Europe (Denmark, England, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden), Africa (Algeria, Niger, Mali, Morocco and Tunisia), North America (Canada and the United States) and South America (Brazil and Uruguay). The pholidosaurids first appeared in the fossil record during the Bathonian stage of the Middle Jurassic. Jouve & Jalil (2020) described postcranial material of a pholidosaurid from the Paleocene (Danian) of Ouled Abdoun Basin (Morocco), representing the most recent record of the family. The authors also reinterpreted putative Maastrichtian dyrosaurid ''Sabinosuchus'' as a pholidosaurid, and argued that at least two independent pholidosaurid lineages reached the Maastrichtian, among which one survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Before the publication of this study it was thought that the family became extinct during the Late Turonian stage of the La ...

Chalawan (genus)
''Chalawan'' (from th, ชาละวัน ) is an extinct genus of pholidosaurid mesoeucrocodylian known from the Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous Phu Kradung Formation of Nong Bua Lamphu Province, northeastern Thailand. It contains a single species, ''Chalawan thailandicus'', with ''Chalawan shartegensis'' as a possible second species. Discovery and Naming The first fossil of ''Chalawan'' was a nearly complete lower jaw collected in the early 1980s from a road-cut near the town of Nong Bua Lamphu, in the upper part of the Phu Kradung Formation. This mandible was at first known from the posterior portion of the bone, described and named by Eric Buffetaut and Rucha Ingavat in 1980 as a new species of the goniopholidid ''Sunosuchus'', ''Sunosuchus thailandicus''. Shortly afterwards more material of the same specimen was found and described. In the early 2000s another locality of the Phu Kradung Formation was discovered near the village of Kham Phok, Mukdahan Province, yieldi ...

Sarcosuchus
''Sarcosuchus'' (; ) is an extinct genus of crocodyliform and distant relative of living crocodilians that lived during the Early Cretaceous, from the late Hauterivian to the early Albian, 133 to 112 million years ago of what is now Africa and South America. The genus name comes from the Greek σάρξ (''sarx'') meaning flesh and σοῦχος (''souchus'') meaning crocodile. It was one of the largest crocodile-like reptiles, reaching an average estimate of and , but estimated to grow up to in body length and weigh up to . It is known from two species, ''S. imperator'' from the early Albian Elrhaz Formation of Niger and ''S. hartti'' from the Late Hauterivian of northeastern Brazil, other material is known from Morocco and Tunisia and possibly Libya and Mali. The first remains were discovered during several expeditions led by the French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent, spanning from 1946 to 1959, in the Sahara. These remains were fragments of the skull, vertebrae, ...

Sabinosuchus
''Sabinosuchus'' (meaning "Sabinas crocodile") is a genus of Mesoeucrocodylian, from the Maastrichtian Escondido Formation of Coahuila, Mexico, with ''Sabinosuchus coahuilensis'' as the type species. First described as a putative dyrosauridae, dyrosaurid by Shiller II ''et al.'' (2016), it was later recovered as a pholidosauridae, pholidosaurid by Jouve & Jalil (2020). History and naming ''Sabinosuchus'' was discovered by amateur paleontologist of the Palaeontologos Aficionados de Sabinas A.C. (PASAC) in 2002 in Mexico. All fossils of Sabinosuchus found by the team stem from the Maastrichtian Escondido Formation, although earlier reports wrongfully believed them to stem from the underlying Olmos Formation. The material collected constitutes two individuals known from fragmentary remains that were later reassembled. Due to this the material was catalogued under several specimen numbers. The holotype material was initially catalogued as specimens PAS 945 to PAS 949 and PAS 952 once ...

Meridiosaurus
''Meridiosaurus'' is an extinct genus of mesoeucrocodylian that is a possible member of the family Pholidosauridae. Remains have been found in the Late Jurassic Tacuarembó Formation in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. The genus was described in 1980 on the basis of a partial rostrum that included the premaxillae and most of the maxillae. The assignment to Pholidosauridae is considered doubtful by some authors, but a 2011 redescription and phylogenetic analysis confirmed the pholidosaurid classification of ''Meridiosaurus''.Fortier, D., Perea, D. and Schultz, C. (2011), Redescription and phylogenetic relationships of Meridiosaurus vallisparadisi, a pholidosaurid from the Late Jurassic of Uruguay. Pholidosaurus
''Pholidosaurus'' is an extinct genus of neosuchian crocodylomorph. It is the type genus of the family Pholidosauridae. Fossils have been found in northwestern Germany. The genus is known to have existed during the Berriasian-Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous. Fossil material found from the Annero and Jydegård Formations in Skåne, Sweden and on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, have been referred to as a mesoeucrocodylian, and possibly represent the genus ''Pholidosaurus''. Description An early description of the genus by Lydekker (1888) mentioned that the orbit is slightly smaller than the supratemporal fossa, the nasals reach the premaxillae, and the vomer appears on the palate. It is similar in appearance to and about as large as the modern gharial. Species The type species of ''Pholidosaurus'' is ''P. schaumburgensis'', named in 1841 from the Wealden of Bückeburg, Germany. ''P. schaumburgensis'' was named on the basis of a natural mould of part of a thorax discover ...

Elosuchus
''Elosuchus'' is an extinct genus of neosuchian crocodyliform that lived during the Middle Cretaceous of what is now Africa ( Niger, Morocco and Algeria). Description and taxonomy ''Elosuchus'' had an elongated snout like a gharial and was probably a fully aquatic animal. The type species, ''E. cherifiensis'' from Algeria and Morocco, was originally described as a species of ''Thoracosaurus'' by Lavocat, but was recognized as a genus separate from ''Thoracosaurus'' by de Broin in 2002. ''Elosuchus felixi'', described from the Echkar Formation of Niger, was renamed ''Fortignathus'' in 2016 and is either a dyrosaurid relative or a non-hyposaurine dyrosaurid.de Broin, F. de L., 2002, ''Elosuchus'', a new genus of crocodile from the Lower Cretaceous of the North of Africa: C. Neosuchia
Neosuchia is a clade within Mesoeucrocodylia that includes all modern extant crocodilians and their closest fossil relatives. It is defined as the most inclusive clade containing all crocodylomorphs more closely related to ''Crocodylus niloticus'' (the Nile Crocodile) than to ''Notosuchus terrestris''. Members of Neosuchia generally share a crocodilian-like bodyform adapted to freshwater aquatic life, as opposed to the terrestrial habits of more basal crocodylomorph groups. The earliest neosuchian is suggested to be the Early Jurassic ''Calsoyasuchus'', which lived during the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian stages in North America. It is often identified as a member of Goniopholididae, though this is disputed, and the taxon may lie outside Neosuchia, which places the earliest records of the group in the Middle Jurassic. Characteristics A tooth notch between the maxilla and premaxilla is a basal characteristic of the Neosuchia, although it is lost in some more derived forms, most nota ...

Paleocene
The Paleocene, ( ) or Palaeocene, is a geological epoch (geology), epoch that lasted from about 66 to 56 mya (unit), million years ago (mya). It is the first epoch of the Paleogene Period (geology), Period in the modern Cenozoic Era (geology), Era. The name is a combination of the Ancient Greek ''palaiós'' meaning "old" and the Eocene Epoch (which succeeds the Paleocene), translating to "the old part of the Eocene". The epoch is bracketed by two major events in Earth's history. The K–Pg extinction event, brought on by Chicxulub impact, an asteroid impact and possibly volcanism, marked the beginning of the Paleocene and killed off 75% of living species, most famously the non-avian dinosaurs. The end of the epoch was marked by the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), which was a major climatic event wherein about 2,500–4,500 gigatons of carbon were released into the atmosphere and ocean systems, causing a spike in global temperatures and ocean acidification. In the Pal ...
