Philip Jablon
Philip Jablon (born ) is an American independent researcher, known for photographing and documenting historic movie palaces and stand-alone movie theaters in Thailand and neighbouring countries through his blog, the ''Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project''. Jablon first came across Thailand's old stand-alone theaters while studying at Chiang Mai University, and was inspired to photograph and document the disappearing buildings. He started publishing photos through his blog in 2009 and has since continued with the project. His work has been exhibited and published in book form. Biography Jablon is from Philadelphia. He says his interest in Asian culture began around age 12–13, when he saw the Hong Kong film '' Police Story 3: Super Cop''. H Project Space
H Gallery is an art gallery in Bang Rak District, Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in a beautiful 125-year-old Anglo-Thai mansion. Established in 2002 by American-born Ernest H. Lee, the two-storey gallery specialises in contemporary art with a mostly Asian focus. H Gallery began working with the Irish-born art critic and curator Brian Curtin in 2011. Curtin inaugurated H Project Space, on the second floor, as a venue for experimental projects including performance, and he continues to also curate much of the main program. 2012 saw the opening of H Gallery Chiang Mai, in Northern Thailand, with an installation of paintings by the Thai artist Mit Jai-Inn. Movie Palace
A movie palace (or picture palace in the United Kingdom) is any of the large, elaborately decorated movie theaters built between the 1910s and the 1940s. The late 1920s saw the peak of the movie palace, with hundreds opening every year between 1925 and 1930. With the advent of television, movie attendance dropped, while the rising popularity of large Multiplex (movie theater), multiplex chains signaled the obsolescence of single-screen theaters. Many movie palaces were razed or converted into multiple-screen venues or performing arts centers, though some have undergone restoration and reopened to the public as historic buildings. Chiang Mai (, from th, เชียงใหม่ , nod, , เจียงใหม่ ), sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest city in northern Thailand, the capital of Chiang Mai province and the second largest city in Thailand.
