Parelius Mentsen
Parelius Meyer Mentsen (1 October 1902 – 22 April 1985) was a Norwegian trade unionist, who served as leader of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) from 1965 to 1969. Mentsen was born in Ballangen, Ofoten. He was a timberer by education and occupation, but soon joined trade union and the Norwegian Labour Party in Narvik. He became secretary of the trade union (Samorg) in Finmark in 1936 and worked at the Tromsø office of Confederation of Trade Unions from 1940. In 1946 he was elected secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions with office in Oslo. He became the deputy leader of the Confederation of Trade Unions from 1950 to 1965 and leader from 1965 to 1969. Norwegian Confederation Of Trade Unions
The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions ( no, Landsorganisasjonen i Norge, LO) is a national trade union center, decidedly the largest and probably the most influential umbrella organization of labour unions in Norway. The 21 national unions affiliated to the LO have almost 1,000,000 members of a Norwegian population of 5 million. The majority of affiliated unions organizes traditional blue collar workers, but the largest affiliate is the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees which makes up more than a third of all members. LO is affiliated to the ITUC and the ETUC. It was named the Workers' National Trade Union ( no, Arbeidernes Faglige Landsorganisasjon, AFL) from 1899 to 1957. Ballangen
Ballangen ( sme, Bálák) is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1925 until its dissolution in 2020. The municipality was part of the traditional district of Ofoten. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Ballangen. Other villages in the municipality included Bjørkåsen, Kjeldebotn, Kobbvika, and Skarstad. The municipality bordered Narvik Municipality to the east and Tysfjord Municipality to the south, and had a short border with Sweden to the southeast. Ballangen was situated on the southern shore of Ofotfjorden. Ballangen also included the long and narrow Efjorden, just south of the much larger Ofotfjorden. Its immediate surroundings were dominated by fjords, mountains, and forests. Ballangen relied on the nearby town of Narvik as its economic base. Ofoten
Ofoten is a traditional district in Nordland county in Northern Norway. It consists of the municipalities of Tysfjord, Ballangen, Evenes, Tjeldsund, Narvik, and Lødingen. It is named after the main fjord, Ofotfjorden, which is at the center of this district. The district was home to 29,968 residents in 2016, with almost half of the residents living in the town of Narvik. Konrad Nordahl
Konrad Mathias Nordahl (25 September 1897 – 22 May 1975) was a Norwegian trade unionist and politician for the Labour Party. He was the leader of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions from 1939 to 1965, and an MP from 1958 to 1965. Early life He was born in Laksevåg, then in a part of the municipality of Askøy. At the age of two, he lost his mother and was raised by his uncle and aunt as foster parents; he was then given the surname Nordahl instead of Johannessen. He joined the Norwegian Labour Party in 1912, and a trade union in 1915. He had secretary jobs for the Labour Party and its youth wing, and became a central board member of the Young Communist League of Norway in 1923. In the same year the organization seceded from the Labour Party, and became the young wing of a new Communist Party of Norway. Tor Aspengren
Ivar Tor Aspengren (1 February 1917 – 23 June 2004) was a Norwegian laborer, trade unionist and politician for the Labour Party. He led the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions from 1969 to 1977. He was born in Nydalen, Aker as a son of Swedish immigrant Gothard Aspengren (1876–1925), who worked at Christiania Spigerverk, and cleaner Thora Aspengren (1881–1961). His father died from a working accident when Tor Aspengren was eight years old. Nonetheless, he started working there at age 14, and remained there from 1931 to 1948. He joined the local trade union Norwegian Union of Iron and Metal Workers already in 1931. He also practiced workers sports in Nydalen AIL. In 1947 he became board chairman of the Oslo branch of the Union of Iron and Metal Workers. He was hired to work for the union in 1949.
