Paphiopedilum Ciliolare
''Paphiopedilum ciliolare'' is a species of flowering plant in the orchid family, Orchidaceae. It is known commonly as the short haired paphiopedilum. It is endemic to the Philippines. This is a rare orchid with a total wild population of fewer than 2500 mature individuals. It is heavily collected for the horticulture trade and its forest habitat is threatened with destruction and degradation. This species is notoriously difficult to propagate. Tryptone is the assortment of peptides formed by the digestion of casein by the protease trypsin. Tryptone is commonly used in microbiology to produce lysogeny broth (LB) for the growth of '' E. coli'' and other microorganisms. It provides a source of amino acids for the growing bacteria. Tryptone is similar to casamino acids, both being digests of casein, but casamino acids can be produced by acid hydrolysis and typically only have free amino acids and few peptide chains; tryptone by contrast is the product of an incomplete enzymatic hydrolysis with some oligopeptides present. Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach
Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (Dresden, 3 January 1823 – Hamburg, 6 May 1889) was a botanist and the foremost German orchidologist of the 19th century. His father Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (author of ''Icones Florae Germanicae et Helveticae'') was also a well-known botanist. Biography He started his study of orchids at the age of 18 and assisted his father in the writing of ''Icones''. He became a Doctor in Botany with his work on the pollen of orchids (see ‘Selected Works’). Soon after his graduation, Reichenbach was appointed to the post of extraordinary professor of botany at the Leipzig in 1855. He then became director of the botanical gardens at the Hamburg University (1863-1889). At that time, thousands of newly discovered orchids were being sent back to Europe. Berthold Stein
Berthold Stein (1847–1899) was a Prussian botanist and lichenologist. After working as a disciple at the Botanical Garden in Berlin in 1865 he became superintendent at the Innsbruck Botanical Garden. He held this position from 1873 to 1880, during which he also started to collect lichens. From 1880 to 1890 he was royal superintendent at the University of Wrocław Botanical Garden. Based on a quote in 1879 by Stein himself he can be considered as a student of Gustav Körber. His main area of interest was the flora of Silesia. Basionym
In the scientific name of organisms, basionym or basyonym means the original name on which a new name is based; the author citation of the new name should include the authors of the basionym in parentheses. Robert Allen Rolfe
Robert Allen Rolfe (1855, Wilford, Nottinghamshire – 1921, Richmond, Surrey) was an English botanist specialising in the study of orchids. For a time he worked in the gardens at Welbeck Abbey. He entered Kew in 1879 and became second assistant. He was the first curator of the orchid herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, founded the magazine ''The Orchid Review'', and published many papers on hybrids of different species of orchids. The genus ''Allenrolfea'' of amaranths was named after him by Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze. Orchidaceae
Orchids are plants that belong to the family Orchidaceae (), a diverse and widespread group of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. The Orchidaceae have about 28,000 currently accepted species, distributed in about 763 genera. Endemism is the state of a species being found in a single defined geographic location, such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere. Paphiopedilum
''Paphiopedilum'', often called the Venus slipper, is a genus of the lady slipper orchid subfamily ''Cypripedioideae'' of the flowering plant family Orchidaceae. The genus comprises some 80 accepted taxa including several natural hybrids. The genus is native to Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, southern China, New Guinea and the Solomon and Bismarck Islands. The type species of this genus is ''Paphiopedilum insigne''. The species and their hybrids are extensively cultivated, and are known as either paphiopedilums, or by the abbreviation paphs in horticulture. Due to their popularity, Paphiopedilums have been ruthlessly gathered and poached from the wild, making them very rare or extinct there. As soon as a new species or population is discovered, poachers will take the plants for orchid collectors who pay large sums of money.
