Oleksandr Sydorenko
236px, Sidorenko in 1980 on Moscow Olympics Oleksandr Sydorenko (27 May 1960 – 20 February 2022), also known as Aleksandr Sidorenko, was an individual medley swimmer from the USSR. He won the 400 m individual medley at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Career Sydorenko won a gold medal at the 1981 European Aquatics Championships in Split, and at the 1982 World Aquatics Championships in Guayaquil in the 200-metre individual medley. At the 1983 Summer Universiade in Edmonton, he won a silver medal in the 200-metre individual medley. Between 1977 and 1986 he became the USSR champion 20 times. Sydorenko won the 400 m individual medley at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He worked from 1987 to 2014 as the manager of the water polo team "Ilyichevets." After retirement he worked as a volunteer in the water Polo Federation of the city of Mariupol. Medley is a combination of four different swimming styles—backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle—into one race. This race is either swum by one swimmer as individual medley (IM) or by four swimmers as a medley relay. 1983 Summer Universiade
The 1983 Summer Universiade, also known as the 1983 World University Games or XII Summer Universiade, took place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between July 1 and 12, 1983. Over 2400 athletes from 73 countries participated. It was the first time Canada hosted these Games. Edmonton also hosted the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The event was marred by tragedy from the death of Soviet diver Sergei Chalibashvili when he died eight days after hitting his head on the 10 m diving platform in competition while attempting a reverse 3½ in the tuck position. Charles, Prince of Wales opened the Universiade accompanied by Princess Diana, and other dignitaries and celebrities also visited. Yelena Kruglova (born March 22, 1962) is a former Soviet swimmer. She was a member of the team that won the 1980 Olympic bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m medley relay and bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m medley relay at World Championships in West Berlin, 1978.
