Oscar Díaz (boxer)
Oscar Diaz (September 29, 1982 – February 26, 2015) was an American professional boxer and a NABF welterweight titleholder. Professional career Díaz made his professional debut on March 16, 2001, and in 2004 suffered his first defeat to Ebo Elder. On July 16, 2008, Diaz took on Delvin Rodriguez on ESPN2. Diaz took serious punishment throughout the fight and was unable to continue in the 11th round of the fight. He then collapsed in the ring. Diaz underwent surgery to reduce the swelling on his brain, and subsequently went into a coma. Later life Diaz awoke from his coma after two months in September 2008, and was reportedly breathing on his own and in stable condition. Welterweight
Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Etymology The first known instance of the term is from 1831, meaning "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" by 1896. This sense comes from earlier "welter" "heavyweight horseman or boxer" from 1804, possibly from "welt", meaning "to beat severely", from 15th century. Orthodox Stance
In combat sports such as boxing, an orthodox stance is one in which the boxer places their left foot farther in front of the right foot, thus having their weaker side closer to the opponent. Because it favors the stronger, dominant side (often the right side; see laterality), the orthodox stance is the most common stance in boxing and MMA. It is mostly used by right-handed boxers. Many boxing champions have fought in an orthodox stance. Alternative stances The corresponding designation for a left-handed boxer is southpaw and is generally a mirror image of the orthodox stance. A southpaw boxer guards and jabs with their right hand. Some famous boxers who use southpaw are Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Victor Ortiz, Sultan Ibragimov, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe, Manny Pacquiao, and Lucian Bute. North American Boxing Federation
The North American Boxing Federation (NABF) is a not-for-profit regional sanctioning body that awards regional boxing titles. It is a boxing federation within the World Boxing Council (WBC). History The WBC established the NABF in 1969 as part of its creation of a variety of regional boxing federations. These regional federations would sanction championship bouts and crown regional champions. These champions would be given consideration in the world rankings put out by the WBC. Ebo Elder
Ebo Elder (born December 23, 1978, in Newnan, Georgia) is a former professional boxer. He is a former WBO NABO Lightweight titleholder, and has also held the IBA Continental Light Welterweight title and WBO Inter-Continental Light Welterweight title. In January 2007 he left boxing to start Reality Ministries and began speaking at churches, colleges, public schools, youth detention centers and more. Delvin Rodriguez
Delvin () is a village in County Westmeath, Ireland; it is located on the N52 road at a junction with the N51 to Navan. The town is from Mullingar (along the N52). The word Delvin comes from Delbhna. That tribe settled in what is present-day Delvin, along with a branch of the Soghain, in '' Tricha céd na Delbna Móire agus na Sogan''.
