Orchidinae
Orchideae is a tribe of orchids in the subfamily Orchidoideae. Historically, it was divided into 2 subtribes, Orchidinae and Habenariinae. The subtribe Orchidinae alone contains about 1,800 species. However, although some phylogenetic studies have established the monophyly of the subtribes, the generic boundaries are unclear, with many genera as traditionally circumscribed being paraphyletic or even polyphyletic. Species of genera such as ''Habenaria'' and ''Platanthera'' have been placed into both subtribes. A 2017 molecular phylogenetic study found that both subtribes did form clades, but did not formally recognize Habenariinae, because of missing genera and uncertainty over generic boundaries. The Asian species of Orchideae, in particular, have been subject to repeated changes of generic placement from 2012 onwards. As of 2017, Orchideae is divided into 6 subtribes: Brownleeinae, Pachitinae, Huttonaeinae, Orchidinae, Coryciinae, and Disinae. Subtribes Once divided into the O ...

Orchidoideae
The Orchidoideae, or the orchidoid orchids, are a subfamily of the orchid family (Orchidaceae) that contains around 3630 species. Species typically have a single (monandrous), fertile anther which is erect and basitonic. Description The subfamily Orchidoideae and the previously recognized subfamily Spiranthoideae are considered the closest allies in the natural group of the monandrous orchids because of several generally shared characters: * a shared terrestrial habit * sectile (capable of being severed) or granular pollinia *erect anthers. Taxonomy Phylogeny of the Orchidoideae is volatile and still subject to change. Historically, the Orchidoideae have been partitioned into up to 6 tribes, including Orchideae, Diseae, Cranichideae, Chloraeeae, Diurideae, and Codonorchideae. However, the most recent molecular phylogenetics analysis led by Chase et al. in 2015 and subsequently by Chen et al. in 2017 indicates that the Orchidoideae should be split into 4 tribes: the Orchide ...

Dactylorhiza
''Dactylorhiza'' is a genus of flowering plants in the orchid family Orchidaceae. Its species are commonly called marsh orchids or spotted orchids. ''Dactylorhiza'' were previously classified under ''Orchis'', which has two round tubers. Description They are hardy tuberous geophytes. In a thickened underground stem, they can store a large amount of water to survive arid conditions. The tuber is flattened and finger-like. The long leaves are lanceolate and, in most species, also speckled. They grow along a rather long stem which reaches a height of . Leaves higher on the stem are shorter than leaves lower on the stem. The inflorescence, compared to the length of the plant, is rather short. It consists of a compact raceme with 25-50 flowers. These develop from axillary buds. The dominant colors are white and all shades of pink to red, sprinkled with darker speckles. Taxonomy Etymology The name ''Dactylorhiza'' is derived from Greek words δάκτυλος ''daktylos'' 'finger' and ...

Anacamptis
''Anacamptis'' is a genus of flowering plants in the orchid family (Orchidaceae); it is often abbreviated as Ant in horticulture. This genus was established by Louis Claude Richard in 1817; the type species is the pyramidal orchid (''A. pyramidalis'') and it nowadays contains about one-third of the species placed in the "wastebin genus" ''Orchis'' before this was split up at the end of the 20th century,Bateman & Hollingsworth (2004) among them many that are of hybrid origin. The genus' scientific name is derived from the Greek word ''anakamptein'', meaning "to bend backwards". These terrestrial orchids occur on grasslands, limestone or chalk deposits, or on dunes in Eurasia, from the Mediterranean region to Central Asia. Systematics Except the pyramidal orchid (''A. pyramidalis''), all species of ''Anacamptis'' seem to form a clade around the green-veined orchid (''A. morio''). They have a diploid chromosome number of 32 or 36. A useful character for distinguishing ''Anacampt ...

Platanthera
The genus ''Platanthera'' belongs to the subfamily Orchidoideae of the family Orchidaceae, and comprises about 150 species of orchids. The members of this genus, known as the butterfly orchids or fringed orchids, were previously included in the genus ''Orchis'', which is a close relative (along with the genus ''Habenaria''). They are distributed throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are terrestrial and have tubercules. Etymology Louis Claude Richard chose the name ''Platanthera'' for this genus; it comes from the Greek and means "broad or wide anther," referring to the separation of the base of the pollinia in the type species of the genus. Richard felt that this characteristic distinguished the genus ''Platanthera'' from both the genus ''Orchis'' and the genus ''Habenaria''. However, today the defining characteristics of the genus are generally accepted to be the absence of both stigmatic processes (typical in ''Habenaria'') and ovoid root-tuberoi ...

Coryciinae
Coryciinae is a subtribe of orchids that has been differently defined and placed in the two classification systems that are currently in use for orchids. ''Genera Orchidacearum'', which is currently the definitive work on orchid taxonomy, delimits Coryciinae as consisting of five genera: '' Disperis'', '' Evotella'', '' Ceratandra'', '' Pterygodium'', and '' Corycium'', and it places Coryciinae in the mostly African tribe Diseae, along with four other subtribes: Brownleeinae, Huttonaeinae, Disinae, and Satyriinae.Alec M. Pridgeon, Phillip J. Cribb, Mark W. Chase, and Finn N. Rasmussen. 1999-2014. ''Genera Orchidacearum'' Oxford University Press. (volume 1), (volume 2), (volume 3), (volume 4), (volume 5), (volume 6) The genera of Coryciinae are small to medium in size and the number of species in each genus is as follows: ''Disperis'' (78), ''Pterygodium'' (19), ''Corycium'' (15), ''Ceratandra'' (6), and ''Evotella'' (1).Mark W.
