Octavian Zidaru
Octavian Zidaru (born 17 October 1953) is a Romanian fencer and coach. Personal life Zidaru took up fencing in 1967 at his school sports club, CSS Triumf, and later joined CSA Steaua București. He first studied economics at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. He holds a Ph.D in sports science from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports of the University of Bucharest. Career As a sportsman, he became national champion of Romania in 1975, and was vice-champion in 1978, 1980, and 1982. He also won eleven gold medal in the team championship for Steaua and the Cupa României in 1982. He competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He ranked only 26th in the individual épée event, but reached the semi-finals in the team event for Romania with Ioan Popa, Anton Pongratz, Costică Bărăgan, and Petru Kuki. European Fencing Confederation
The European Fencing Confederation (EFC; french: Confédération européenne d'escrime, CEE) is an international body created in 1991, charged with the promotion and development of fencing in Europe. It organises the European Fencing Championships annually at several levels: cadets (U17), junior (U20), under 23, seniors and veterans (more than 40 years old). The Confederation comprises all national European fencing federations, plus that of Israel, and is under the authority of FIE. In reaction to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EFC agreed with the FIE to ban Russian and Belarusian fencers, and reallocated competitions that were due to be held in Russia and Belarus. Amalia Tătăran
Amalia Tătăran (born 15 July 1994 in Satu Mare) is a Romanian épée fencing, fencer, team silver medallist at the 2013 European Fencing Championships and team gold medallist at the 2015 European Games. Career Tătăran took up fencing at the age of 9 in Satu Mare, a Romanian fencing stronghold, under the guidance of coach Francisc Csiszar. She won a bronze medal at the 2010 Cadet World Championships in Baku. She also represented Romania at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, finishing fifth. In 2012, she became the youngest member of the Romanian national team. The same year she won the Romanian Cup after defeating in the final Olympic silver medallist Ana Maria Brânză. Raluca Sbîrcia
Raluca Sbîrcia (born 14 July 1989) is a Romanian épée fencer, bronze medallist in the 2013 World Fencing Championships. Sbârcia joined the Romanian national team in 2012 after Simona Gherman, Loredana Dinu, and Anca Măroiu took a post-Olympic break. Maria Udrea
Maria Ruxandra Udrea (born on 23 Novembre 1990) is a Romanian épée fencer. She won a team silver medal in the 2013 European Fencing Championships in Zagreb and a bronze medal in the 2013 World Fencing Championships in Budapest. Biography Udrea's first sports were swimming and tennis. She discovered fencing at the age of seven at Olimpia Bucharest, and took to the sport. She first competed in foil. In this weapon, she won a silver medal in the 2008 Cadet European Championships at Novi Sad, a gold medal in the Junior World Cup in 2009, a bronze medal in the Junior European Championships at Odense that same year, and a silver medal in the 2010 Romanian Championship. Simona Pop née Deac (born 25 December 1988) is a retired Romanian épée fencer, bronze medallist at the 2015 European Championships, team silver medallist in the 2015 World Fencing Championships and team European champion in 2014 and 2015. Personal life Pop was born in Satu Mare to a Hungarian father and Romanian mother. Pop took up fencing at CS Satu Mare, one of the main fencing centres in Romania, under the coaching of Francisc Csiszar who went on to train her for twelve years. Ana Maria Brânză
Ana Maria Popescu, formerly known as Ana Maria Brânză (, born 26 November 1984), is a Romanian left-handed épée fencer. Popescu is a four-time team European champion, 2013 individual European champion, and two-time team world champion. A five-time Olympian, Popescu is a two-time individual Olympic silver medalist and 2016 team Olympic champion. Personal life Brânză was born in 1984 in the Rahova district of Bucharest, the second of two children. A very energetic child, she was pushed by her parents towards sport. Simona Gherman
Simona Gherman (née Alexandru; born 12 April 1985) is a retired Romanian épée fencer, European champion in 2012 and 2016. She was twice team World Champion in 2010 and 2011 and five-time team European Champion in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015. Career Gherman was born in Bucharest in 1985. Her first significant result was a team bronze medal with Loredana Iordăchioiu and Ana Maria Brânză at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Plovdiv. The same year, she won a Junior World Cup tournament in Palermo. Gherman then joined the senior national team captained by Brânză. Anca Măroiu
Anca Măroiu (née Băcioiu, born 5 August 1983) is a Romanian épée fencer. She is double team world champion, in 2010 and 2011, silver medallist at the 2012 European Fencing Championships and three-time European team champion (2006, 2009 and 2011). Career Măroiu first took up gymnastics, but found herself too tall in primary school. She switched to fencing, learning under Nicolae Mihăilescu, then Mircea Alecu. Being of a combative temperament, she chose épée, the weapon of the duel. When she was 14 years old she was selected into the national training centre for juniors within the Petrache Trișcu sports high school in Craiova under Dan Podeanu's coaching.
