Simona Gherman
Simona Gherman (née Alexandru; born 12 April 1985) is a retired Romanian épée fencer, European champion in 2012 and 2016. She was twice team World Champion in 2010 and 2011 and five-time team European Champion in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015. Career Gherman was born in Bucharest in 1985. Her first significant result was a team bronze medal with Loredana Iordăchioiu and Ana Maria Brânză at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Plovdiv. The same year, she won a Junior World Cup tournament in Palermo. Gherman then joined the senior national team captained by Brânză. Along with Iordăchioiu and Anca Măroiu, they won the European Championships in 2008 and 2009. In the 2010 World Fencing Championships, the “ girls”—a nickname the Romanian team had given themselves after the ''Powerpuff Girls'' anime— took the first Romanian team gold in épée after defeating Germany at the Grand Palais in Paris. Ana Maria Popescu, formerly known as Ana Maria Brânză (, born 26 November 1984), is a Romanian left-handed épée fencer. Popescu is a four-time team European champion, 2013 individual European champion, and two-time team world champion. A five-time Olympian, Popescu is a two-time individual Olympic silver medalist and 2016 team Olympic champion. Personal life Brânză was born in 1984 in the Rahova district of Bucharest, the second of two children. A very energetic child, she was pushed by her parents towards sport. Loredana Dinu
Loredana Dinu (born Iordăchioiu; born 2 April 1984) is a retired Romanian épée fencer, twice World champion and twice European champion with Romania. Biography Dinu began fencing at age 11 after coaches from different sports did a presentation at her school. Her first coaches were Dumitru Popescu and Radu Mitrăchioiu. She took part in her first national championship at age 15; she was defeated in the final by Ana Maria Brânză, with whom she would later fence for Romania. Dinu's first major results were a silver medal in the 2001 Junior World Championships and a bronze in the 2004 Junior World Championships. Fencing
Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, singlestick, appeared in the 1904 Olympics but was dropped after that and is not a part of modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics.
