Norway In The Eurovision Song Contest 1997
Norway was represented by Tor Endresen, with the song "San Francisco", at the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 3 May in Dublin. "San Francisco" was chosen as the Norwegian entry at the Melodi Grand Prix on 8 March, and is mainly remembered for bringing Norway's recent run of Eurovision success – they had finished 5th, 6th, 1st and 2nd in the previous four contests – to a spectacular end. Before Eurovision Melodi Grand Prix 1997 ''Melodi Grand Prix 1997'' was the Norwegian national final that selected Norway's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 1997. Competing entries 350 submissions were received by NRK. Eight songs were selected for the competition by a three-member jury panel. Tor Endresen
Tor Lars Oskar Endresen (born 15 June 1959 in Bergen) is a Norwegian singer and composer. He has entered the Norwegian song selection for the Eurovision Song Contest numerous times, but has only won it once, and represented Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, where he finished in last place with nul points. Endresen was part of a popular Norwegian TV show in the early 1990s, a show with pop music from the 1950s and 1960s called ''Lollipop'', as a singing bartender. The show went on for 30 episodes, and there were released three albums (English lyrics) with music from the show which sold very well in Norway. A single called "Black Rain" which was released from his album ''Call Me Stranger'' in 1986, was nearly chosen as the themesong for the James Bond film ''The Living Daylights'' in 1987. Fredrik Friis
Hans Fredrik Friis-Olsen, born 2 April 1923 in Sandefjord, Norway, died 15 March 2008, was one of Norway's first talent scouts, music managers and producers. He was also a noted composer, lyricist and singer, producing more than 600 songs of his own. Friis was one of the early pioneers in the Norwegian music business, even much underappreciated, discovering artists who would not only plague the national charts, but also seek International notoriety, at a time where Norway did not have any infrastructure, nor much plans for its music exportation. Most famous is Anita Hegerland. But Nationally, Teddy Nelson, Eivind Løberg, Gluntan and Ivar Simastuen. He made his recording debut in 1951. Friis' musical career started with a local performance at home in Sandefjord when he was five years old. He bought a saxophone and started his first orchestra, Daisy Bell, in 1940. Norway has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 60 times since making its debut in and has only been absent twice since then. In 1970, the country boycotted the contest over disagreements about the voting structure, and in 2002, they were relegated.
