North West ( tn, Bokone Bophirima) is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa, the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa, the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of North West. The constituency currently elects 13 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 1,702,728 registered electors. National Assembly Of South Africa
The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Assembly is presided over by a Speaker, assisted by a Deputy Speaker. The current Speaker is Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula who previously served as the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. She was elected on 19 August 2021. Negotiations To End Apartheid In South Africa
The apartheid system in South Africa was ended through a series of bilateral and multi-party negotiations between 1990 and 1993. The negotiations culminated in the passage of a new interim Constitution in 1993, a precursor to the Constitution of 1996; and in South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994, won by the African National Congress (ANC) liberation movement. The Interim Constitution was the fundamental law of South Africa from the first non-racial general election on 27 April 1994 until it was superseded by the final constitution on 4 February 1997. Isaac Sello Seitlholo (born 9 September 1989) is a South African politician, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance, and the current Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation. Cheryl Phillips (politician)
Cheryl Phillips (born 23 February 1962) is a South African politician from the North West who has served in the National Assembly since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she has been the Shadow Deputy Minister of the Standing Committee on the Auditor General since April 2023. She was the Shadow Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy from June 2019 to December 2020 and the Shadow Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries from December 2020 until April 2023.
