Cheryl Phillips (politician)
Cheryl Phillips (born 23 February 1962) is a South African politician from the North West who has served in the National Assembly since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she has been the Shadow Deputy Minister of the Standing Committee on the Auditor General since April 2023. She was the Shadow Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy from June 2019 to December 2020 and the Shadow Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries from December 2020 until April 2023. Phillips had previously served as a ward councillor in Rustenburg. Political career Phillips campaigned for the "Yes" vote in the 1992 referendum. She moved to Rustenburg in 2001 and joined the Democratic Party. She later joined the Democratic Alliance. In 2014, she was appointed to her ward's committee. John Steenhuisen
John Henry Steenhuisen (born 25 March 1976) is a South African politician who has served as the leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the federal leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020, having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019. Ideologically, Steenhuisen has been described as a liberal, a supporter of non-racialism and a firm believer in racial equality. Born in Durban, he matriculated from Northwood Boys' High School. Steenhuisen joined the Democratic Party and was elected to the Durban City Council in 1999 as the councillor for Durban North. Rustenburg (; , Afrikaans and Dutch: ''City of Rest'') is a city at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range. Rustenburg is the most populous city in North West province, South Africa (549,575 in 2011 and 626,522 in the 2016 census). The Democratic Party (DP) was the name of the South African political party now called the Democratic Alliance. Although the Democratic Party name dates from 1989, the party existed under other labels throughout the apartheid years, when it was the Parliamentary opposition to the ruling National Party's policies. Background The Progressive Federal Party had formed the main parliamentary opposition to the Apartheid regime in the whites-only House of Assembly since 1977. But the party was ousted as the official opposition in the 1987 election and pushed into third place behind the far-right Conservative Party, which opposed even the limited reforms the NP had recently implemented. The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Assembly is presided over by a Speaker, assisted by a Deputy Speaker. Semakaleng Patricia Kopane (born 23 July 1966) is a South African politician. She is the current provincial chairperson of ActionSA in the Free State. A former member of the Democratic Alliance, she served as a Member of the National Assembly from May 2009 until her resignation from the DA in August 2022. She was the Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Free State province from 2012 to 2020. North West (South African Province)
North West is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Mahikeng. The province is located to the west of the major population centre of Gauteng and south of Botswana. History North West was incorporated after the end of Apartheid in 1994, and includes parts of the former Transvaal Province and Cape Province, as well as most of the former bantustan of Bophuthatswana.
