New Zealand Stakes
The New Zealand Stakes, currently run as the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes, is a Group One thoroughbred horse race in New Zealand. It is run at Ellerslie racecourse on the final day of the Auckland Cup Week Carnival in March for a stake of $200,000. History The New Zealand Stakes was introduced as a weight-for-age race in the 1974/75 New Zealand racing season. Group One
Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. In Europe, the level of races for Thoroughbred racing is determined using the Pattern races, Pattern race system introduced in 1971 and monitored by the European Pattern Committee. To attain or maintain a Group One status, the average rating for the first four finishers in the race must be 115 or higher over a three-year period. The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities works to ensure consistent international standards. Group One races may only be restricted to age groups or a stipulated sex: they should not be restricted to horses bred in a certain country (though there are regional exceptions to this rule). Fastnet Rock (horse)
Fastnet Rock is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse stallion. Sired by Danehill to dam Piccadilly Circus, he started his racing career in 2004. Though he did not win any races as a two-year-old, he ran third in the Group One AJC Sires Produce Stakes. He found great success after turning three years old. After being unplaced in the Caulfield Guineas, he proved himself as one of the top Australian sprinters by winning the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and Oakleigh Plate in February 2005. Trainer Paul Perry wished Fastnet Rock to repeat the successful English campaign by Choisir, who is trained by Perry, in 2003. After he ran second in the T J Smith Stakes in March 2005, Fastnet Rock was sent to the United Kingdom to prepare for the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and July Cup. Sir Slick
Sir Slick (foaled 2001) is a bay gelding Thoroughbred racehorse by Volksraad from the Paris Opera mare Miss Opera. The New Zealand bred Sir Slick was the winner of Six Group One races in New Zealand and he also raced in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Racing career Bred by Monovale Holdings Limited, Sir Slick was a NZ$48,000 purchase from Mapperley Stud at the 2003 Select Colts Karaka Yearling Sale by Graeme Nicholson. Vosne Romanee
Vosne Romanee (foaled 17 September 2002) is a three-time Group 1 winning New Zealand Horse. While being a competitive Group 1 horse earlier in his career, he rose to prominence as a seven-year-old in 2009/10. His most significant win came as one of several longshots in the Kelt Capital Stakes in October 2009, and followed up with wins in the Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day and the New Zealand Stakes in March 2010. The achievements were more notable as the three events were among the most competitive races in New Zealand that season. These wins led to the Vosne Romanee being named the New Zealand Horse of the Year for the 2009/10 season. Vosne Romanee returned in 2010 to race in the Kelt Capital Stakes. Graeme Rogerson
Graeme Arthur Rogerson is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He is notable for having trained more race-day winners than any other trainer in New Zealand and for having won many Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Biography Rogerson was raised in Te Rapa. Before training he tried his hand at amateur riding. He originally trained horses at Cambridge before moving to Tuhikaramea Road in the 1970s. For a time he has trained in successful partnerships with Stephen Autridge and Keith Hawtin. Rogerson was the youngest New Zealand trainer to get to 1,000 winners. Rogerson branched out and established stables and partnerships in Australia and Dubai. James McDonald (born 6 January 1992) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racing jockey and member of the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Savabeel
Savabeel is a retired Australian Thoroughbred race horse and active sire. He is best known for his win in the 2004 Cox Plate. He was trained by Graeme Rogerson, and ridden by Chris Munce in his most important wins. Breeding Savabeel, foaled on 23 September 2001, is a brown horse sired by champion New Zealand sire Zabeel out of the multiple Group 1 winner Savannah Success. Racing career In Spring 2004 he won the race considered the Weight for Age Championship of Australasia, the Cox Plate, beating the previous year's winner Fields of Omagh. Ocean Park (horse)
Ocean Park (foaled 13 October 2008) is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse. His biggest win came on 27 October 2012 in the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley racecourse. He was bred by Trelawney Stud. After a promising 3 year old year, Ocean Park rose to prominence in the spring of his four-year-old season, winning 4 Group 1s in a row before running 3rd in the McKinnon Stakes. His tactical speed, ability to relax mid race and powerful sustained finishing burst are considered his greatest assets. O'Reilly (horse)
O'Reilly (24 August 1993 - 31 December 2014) was a New Zealand bred and trained thoroughbred racehorse who won two Group 1 races. O'Reilly was bred by Waikato Stud Holdings Limited. His dam, Courtza, was the winner of the 1989 Golden Slipper Stakes. He was named after the Irish international rugby player and businessman Tony O'Reilly. He was entered in the 1995 Karaka Yearling Sales but was unable to be sold when he failed a veterinary test, due to an abnormality in his larynx, so he was retained by his owner, Gary Chittick. Racing career O'Reilly was initially placed with Melbourne trainer, Gerald Ryan, but due to injuries was put out to paddock for eight months. Silent Achiever (foaled 18 September 2008) is a champion New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse. On 3 March 2012, she won the 137th running of the New Zealand Derby. She was the first filly to win the race since 1993, and only the fourth in the last 45 years. Background Silent Achiever is trained by Roger James at his Kingsclere Stables in Cambridge, New Zealand. Zabeel
Zabeel (25 October 1986 – 25 September 2015) was a New Zealand-bred racehorse who predominantly raced in Australia. He was retired to stud and became a champion sire. He is a bay son of Sir Tristram (IRE) from the Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. During his racing career, he won seven races, including the Moonee Valley Stakes in 1989 and the Australian Guineas, the Alister Clark Stakes, and the Craiglee Stakes in 1990. After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong.
