Zabeel
Zabeel (25 October 1986 – 25 September 2015) was a New Zealand-bred racehorse who predominantly raced in Australia. He was retired to stud and became a champion sire. He is a bay son of Sir Tristram (IRE) from the Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. During his racing career, he won seven races, including the Moonee Valley Stakes in 1989 and the Australian Guineas, the Alister Clark Stakes, and the Craiglee Stakes in 1990. After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong. Zabeel has also sired the Australian champions Octagonal and Might And Power, who won 17 Group One races between them, including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates, three runnings of the Mercedes Classic, and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown. Zabeel Classic
The Zabeel Classic is a Group One Thoroughbred horse race run at weight-for-age over a distance of 2000 metres at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on Boxing Day, a raceday steeped in tradition that frequently attracts in excess of 20,000 Aucklanders to the famous course. The Zabeel Classic is named in honour of Zabeel, son of Sir Tristram and four-time New Zealand champion sire. Might And Power
Might and Power (6 October 1993 – 11 April 2020) was a New Zealand bred, Australian owned and trained Thoroughbred racehorse who was named Australian Horse of the Year in 1998 and 1999. As a four-year-old, Might And Power won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and returned at five to become only the second horse in the history of Australian racing to win both Cups and the Cox Plate. He also won a number of other weight-for-age races in this period, including the Mercedes Classic, the AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Doomben Cup. A strong, free-striding front-runner, he broke course records in winning the Caulfield Cup, the Doomben Cup, and the Cox Plate, and won a number of races by big margins. Octagonal (8 October 1992 – 15 October 2016) was a champion New Zealand-bred, Australian raced Thoroughbred racehorse, also known as 'The Big O' or 'Occy'. He was by the champion sire Zabeel, out of the champion broodmare Eight Carat, who also produced Group One winners Mouawad, Kaapstad, Diamond Lover and (Our) Marquise. Biography Bob Ingham, along with brother Jack Ingham, purchased and raced Octagonal. Trained by John Hawkes, Octagonal made his debut late in 1994, and was crowned the Australian Champion Two Year Old on the strength of his autumn campaign, which comprised wins in the Todman Trial and AJC Sires Produce Stakes and close seconds in the STC Golden Slipper and AJC Champagne Stakes. Australian Champion Racehorse Of The Year
The Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year is awarded to the Thoroughbred horse who is voted to be the champion horse within an Australian racing season. This award is open to all racehorses racing within Australia, regardless of age and sex, and includes overseas performances. This award originally started as the VRC Award and was renamed Australia's Champion Racehorse in 1982. A separate award was voted on between 1976/77 and 1993/4 by the ARMA with the only variations being Gurner's Lane (1982/3) and Bonecrusher (1986/7). The voting bodies combined from 1993/4. Patrick Hogan (racehorse Breeder)
Sir Patrick Hogan (23 October 1939 – 6 January 2023) was a New Zealand breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses, based in Cambridge. He was closely associated with the champion sires Sir Tristram and Zabeel. Early life and family Hogan was born in Rotorua on 23 October 1939. His mother was Sarah Margaret Hogan ( Small), and his father was Thomas (Tom) Hogan who emigrated from Ballindooley, County Galway, Ireland, in 1914 at the age of 19. He received his education at Hautapu Primary and St. Patrick's College, Silverstream. In 1962, he married Justine Alice Heath, the daughter of William and Phyllis Heath. They have had two daughters. Career Hogan was a partner in the Fencourt Stud from 1965 to 1977, and in 1977 established the Cambridge Stud, with the outstanding sire Sir Tristram. Sir Tristram
Sir Tristram (IRE) (7 April 1971 – 21 May 1997) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who stood at stud in New Zealand, where he sired an extraordinary 45 Group One winners, including three Melbourne Cup winners. His progeny earned him 17 official Leading Australasian sire premierships, plus nine broodmare sire titles. Background Sir Tristram was by the outstanding racehorse and sire Sir Ivor (by Sir Gaylord) out of Isolt (by Round Table), and had 19 starts for two wins in France. The Makybe Diva Stakes, previously called the Craiglee Stakes, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race at Weight for age conditions for three year olds and older, over a distance of 1,600 metres held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in September. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. Vengeance of Rain (21 September 2000 – 25 October 2011) was a Thoroughbred racehorse in Hong Kong that won Dubai Sheema Classic (Int'l Group One (G1) over 2,400 metres), the joint richest turf race in the world. Vengeance of Rain was foaled in New Zealand, trained by David E. Ferraris, ridden mostly by Anthony Delpech and owned by Raymond Gianco Chow Hon Man & Chow Chu May Ping. He was raced in Australia under the name Subscribe before being sold by his owner Lloyd Williams. Vengeance of Rain's total stakes were over $7.9 million which rated in top 10 of the world. Alister Clark Stakes
The Alister Clark Stakes is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race, for three-year-olds, at Set Weights, over a distance of 2040 metres, held annually usually at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne on a Friday night in March. Total prize money for the race is A$200,000. History The race is named after Alister Clark, the foundation chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club and master of Oaklands Hunt Club from 1901 to 1908. He was also the pre-eminent Australian rose breeder of the twentieth century. The race was first run in 1939 and has had changes in distance and grade. New Zealand Racing Hall Of Fame
The New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame recognises and honours those whose achievements have enriched the New Zealand thoroughbred horse racing industry. History The Hall of Fame's first group of honorees were inducted in 2006, and inductions are held every other year. The inaugural chairman was Gerald Fell. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Induction dinner scheduled for 3 May 2020 was postponed. At that stage, three inductees had been announced: Mufhasa, James McDonald and Sir Peter Vela. The dinner was held on 2 May 2021 and nine new inductees were welcomed. Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand, for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit in the suburb of Ellerslie, with a circumference of just under 1,900 metres. Racing is conducted in a clockwise (right-handed) direction. History Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage.
