James McDonald (jockey)
James McDonald (born 6 January 1992) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racing jockey and member of the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. On 2 November 2021, McDonald rode the winning horse Verry Elleegant in the 2021 Melbourne Cup. He is the World Jockey of the Year for 2021 in the TRC Global Rankings. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. The Caulfield Guineas is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held over 1600 metres (1 mile) at set weights for three-year-old horses at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Total prize money is A$3 million. The race is held annually on the second Saturday in October and forms part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Caulfield Racecourse. Zaaki
Zaaki (foaled 15 February 2015) is a British bred and Australian trained thoroughbred racehorse that has won multiple Group One races. Background Ahmad Alotaibi bought Zaaki for 40,000 Guineas at the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale out of the Staffordstown draft. Racing career Originally trained by Mohamed Moubarak, Zaaki went winless from 4 starts in the 2017 season. In 2018 he was transferred to the stables of Sir Michael Stoute and was successful at his first start for his new trainer on the 21 April at Thirsk. In 2019 he won the Strensall Stakes at York, the Diomed Stakes at Epsom and the Paradise Stakes at Ascot. Zaaki was sold at the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 150,000 Guineas. He was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock with the intention to be raced and trained in Australia. In Secret (foaled 2 September 2019) is a Group 1 winning Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. Background In Secret was bred by Longwood Thoroughbred Farm and Segenhoe Stud and consigned for sale at the 2021 Magic Millions sale. She was the only horse purchased at these sales by Godolphin for $900,000. In Secret's broodmare, Eloping, won over $1 million dollars in her racing career, culminating with Group 3 victories in the Keith Mackay Handicap and Champagne Stakes. Home Affairs (foaled 16 August 2018) is an Australian thoroughbred racehorse that has won multiple Group One races. Background Home Affairs was born and bred in Torryburn, New South Wales at the boutique Torryburn Stud. He is the second foal from the broodmare, Miss Interiors, whose first foal, Aysar, ran second in the 2020 Caulfield Guineas behind Ole Kirk. Home Affairs was purchased as a yearling for A$875,000 by Coolmore, who also syndicated the horse to many international and domestic owners. Racing career 2020/21: two-year-old season Home Affairs made his debut on the 30 January 2021 at Rosehill in the Canonbury Stakes over 1,100 metres. Champions Mile
The Champions Mile is a Group 1 flat horse race in Hong Kong for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) on the turf at Sha Tin Racecourse with the total purse of HK$14m in 2014/15, approximately US$1.8m. It was first run in 2001, and was opened to international competition in 2005 and granted an international grade 1 status in 2007.
