At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, a single modern pentathlon event was contested. Gotthard Handrick (25 October 1908 – 30 May 1978) was a German Olympic athlete and German fighter pilot during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Career Handrick was born on 25 October 1908 in Zittau, at the time in the Kingdom of Saxony as part of the German Empire. He won the gold medal in the modern pentathlon at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. In July 1937, Handrick was appointed '' Gruppenkommandeur'' (group commander) of ''Jagdgruppe'' 88 (18 July 1937 – 10 September 1938). Karl Leban (27 November 1908 – 28 July 1941) was an Austrian speed skater and modern pentathlete who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics and in the 1936 Summer Olympics. At the Winter Games he finished sixth in the 500 m and twelfth in the 1500 m event. At the Summer Games he placed 26th in the modern pentathlon.
