Montréal-Outremont was a former provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1939 election from part of Westmount electoral district. Its final election was in 1962. It disappeared in the 1966 election and its successor electoral district was Outremont. Outremont (provincial Electoral District)
Outremont was a provincial electoral district in the city of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. It comprised all of the borough of Outremont and parts of the boroughs of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal (part of Mile End), Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (part of Côte-des-Neiges) and a very small part of Ville-Marie. It was created for the 1966 election from parts of Montréal-Outremont and Westmount–Saint-Georges electoral districts. In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was unchanged. A by-election took place on December 9, 2013, in which Philippe Couillard, leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, won over 50 percent of votes. Following the change in the 2017 electoral map, the riding was dissolved into D'Arcy-McGee, Mercier and the new riding of Mont-Royal–Outremont. Henri Groulx
Henri Groulx (21 May 1888 – 16 July 1952) was a Canadian pharmacist and politician. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Groulx was educated at the Collège Mont-Saint-Louis, Collège Saint-Laurent and at Université Laval à Montréal. He was a pharmacist since 1914 and owned a pharmacy. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for Montréal-Outremont in 1939. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1944, 1948, and 1952. He was a Provincial Secretary (1939-1940), Minister of Health (1939-1941), Minister of Welfare (1940-1941), and Minister of Health and Welfare (1941-1944). He received an honorary degree in pharmacy from the Université de Montréal on May 30, 1941. Georges-Émile Lapalme
Georges-Émile Lapalme (January 14, 1907 – February 5, 1985) was a politician in Quebec, Canada and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, and leader of the Quebec Liberal Party. Background He was born in Montreal. He studied law at the Université de Montréal. Lapalme was married to Maria Langlois for nearly 50 years, with whom he had seven children. Member of Parliament Lapalme was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1945 federal election and served until 1950. 1939 Quebec General Election
The 1939 Quebec general election was held on October 25, 1939, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The Quebec Liberal Party, led by former premier Adélard Godbout, defeated the incumbent Union Nationale, led by Maurice Duplessis. This was Godbout's second non-consecutive term of office and his only victory out of four consecutive general elections opposing Duplessis. The Action libérale nationale, which had won 25 seats in the 1935 election and then merged with the Quebec Conservative Party, was re-formed by Paul Gouin, who had split with Duplessis soon after the formation of the Union Nationale. However the ALN obtained only 4.5% of the vote and no seats. It soon disbanded. Also, a rump Conservative Party ran three candidates who won 0.2% of the vote and no seats. This party also disbanded. Montreal is one of the administrative regions of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is also a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and a census division (CD), for both of which its geographical code is 66. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. Westmount was a former provincial electoral district located in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada. It corresponded to the city of Westmount in Montreal. It was created for the 1912 election from Montréal–Saint-Georges. It disappeared in the 1939 election and its successor election was Westmount–Saint-Georges. However, Westmount–Saint-Georges disappeared in the 1966 election and its successor electoral district was the re-created Westmount. 1962 Quebec General Election
The 1962 Quebec general election was held on November 14, 1962, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage, was re-elected, defeating the '' Union Nationale'' (UN) led by Daniel Johnson, Sr. In an unusual move, the election was called just two years after the previous 1960 general election. Lesage sought a mandate for the Nationalization of the electricity industry, with the slogan Maîtres chez nous (Masters in Our Own Home), declaring it a single issue important enough to stake his political career on it. A few days before the election, the ''Union Nationales chief organizer André Lagarde was arrested for fraud. The Liberals claimed this was proof of lingering corruption dating from the Maurice Duplessis era, but the UN cried foul and was vindicated after the election. 1966 Quebec General Election
The 1966 Quebec general election was held on June 5, 1966, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The Union Nationale (UN), led by Daniel Johnson, Sr, defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage. In terms of the number of seats won, the election was one of the closest in recent history, with the UN winning 56 seats to the Liberals' 50. Generally, Quebec's first past the post electoral system tends to produce strong disparities in the number of seats won even if the popular vote is fairly close. In this case, the most popular party did not win the most seats in the chamber. The Liberals won 6.5% more votes, but were denied a third term because the rural part of the province, where the Union Nationale did well, were slightly over-represented in the legislature.
