Montana Highway 24 (MT 24) is a state highway in the US state of Montana. It begins at MT 200 near Brockway, and ends at the Saskatchewan border at Port of Opheim. Along the way, it intersects MT 117, MT 42 and US Highway 2 (US 2). Route description MT 24 begins at an intersection with MT 200 near Brockway. The route then proceeds northward through a rural area along the eastern shore of Fort Peck Lake. The highway turns to the west, crosses the Fort Peck Dam before passing through Fort Peck, Montana, and travels just yards from the northern shore of the lake. It intersects with MT 117, as it exits Fort Peck, and enters Wheeler. The highway heads northwest before turning due north. From here, it intersects MT 42, just prior to intersecting with US 2. Montana Highway 117 (MT 117) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Montana. Formerly Secondary Highway 249, the route allows traffic from MT 24 at Fort Peck to travel north to U.S. Route 2 (US 2) at Nashua, providing a shortcut between the two routes, as well as providing access from the north to the Fort Peck Dam and Fort Peck Lake. Route description Highway 117 begins at the western end of the Fort Peck Dam, in a tightly angled junction with Highway 24. It proceeds eastwards, winding its way through the town of Fort Peck before turning northwards at a T-intersection on its northern outskirts. Fort Peck, Montana
Fort Peck is a town in Valley County, Montana, United States. The population was 239 at the 2020 census. History The name Fort Peck is associated with Col. Campbell K. Peck, the partner of Elias H. Durfee in the Leavenworth, Kansas trading firm of Durfee and Peck. In 1867, company employee Abe Farwell constructed the Fort Peck trading post along the Missouri River, which enjoyed a virtual monopoly in trade with the Sioux and Assiniboine people. After its short life as a trading post, Fort Peck served as an Indian agency from 1873 until 1878. At that time, the agency was moved to its current location at Poplar. Fort Peck had a post office from 1879 to 1881. A new town of Fort Peck, located approximately two miles north of the original, was built in 1934 to house Army Corps of Engineers employees involved in the construction of the Fort Peck Dam. Fort Peck Dam
The Fort Peck Dam is the highest of six major dams along the Missouri River, located in northeast Montana in the United States, near Glasgow, and adjacent to the community of Fort Peck. At in length and over in height, it is the largest hydraulically filled dam in the United States, and creates Fort Peck Lake, the fifth largest artificial lake in the U.S., more than long, deep, and it has a shoreline which is longer than the state of California's coastline. It lies within the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. The dam and the lake are owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and exist for the purposes of hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water quality management. Fort Peck Lake
Fort Peck Lake, or Lake Fort Peck, is a major reservoir in Montana, formed by the Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River. The lake lies in the eastern prairie region of Montana approximately east of Great Falls and north of Billings, reaching into portions of six counties. The dam and reservoir were built in the 1930s to enhance navigation on the Missouri River, supplying enough water downstream of the dam to provide for a 9-foot deep, 300-foot wide navigation channel from Sioux City, Iowa, to the mouth of the Missouri just above St. Louis. Montana Highway 42 (MT 42) is a short, state highway in the U.S. state of Montana, connecting MT 24 with downtown Glasgow. Formerly Highway 24W, Highway 42 (its route number a reversal of "24") runs northwest from where Highway 24 crosses the BNSF Railway's Northern Transcon, staying parallel to the tracks until it turns right in Glasgow's downtown and dives under the railroad to meet with and terminates at U.S. Route 2 (US 2). Brockway is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southern McCone County, Montana, United States, located near the Redwater River. At the 2000 census, the Brockway area had a population of approximately 140 people.
