MT 42 begins at a T-intersection with MT 24 southwest of

. MT 24 makes up the northern and southeastern leg of the intersection, while MT 42 heads to the northwest. For most of its length, the route is situated between the Milk River and the Northern Transcon. MT 42 and the railroad enter Glasgow from the southeast and both curve to the north-northwest; in town, the highway follows First Avenue South. Near the city's
