Miss Universe 1954
Miss Universe 1954, the 3rd edition of Miss Universe pageant, was held on 24 July 1954 at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, United States. There were 33 competitors. Miss USA, 21-year-old Miriam Stevenson won the competition. She was the first American Miss Universe and the first winner to be crowned by the outgoing Miss Universe (who was Miss Universe 1953, Christiane Martel of France). Stevenson is the first Miss Universe to concurrently hold the Miss USA and Miss Universe titles (future American Miss Universe winners had to step down as Miss USA upon winning Miss Universe beginning in 1961). Miriam Stevenson
Miriam Jacqueline Stevenson (born July 4, 1933) is an American television host, actress, former model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 1954. She was the first American to win the title, and had previously been crowned Miss USA 1954. Prior to Miss USA, Stevenson was Miss South Carolina USA, Miss South Carolina USA 1954. She also represented South Carolina in Miss America 1954 after winning Miss South Carolina, Miss South Carolina 1953, where she placed in the top ten. At Miss Universe, Stevenson received a tied final score with Martha Rocha of Brazil. In order to break the tie, the woman deemed to have the better physique was crowned the winner, due to a major sponsor of the pageant being Catalina Swimwear. This was determined to be Stevenson, due to having "fitter" hips than Rocha. She was crowned Miss Universe by outgoing titleholder Christiane Martel of France. Miss USA
Miss USA is an American beauty pageant that has been held annually since 1952 to select the entrant from United States in the Miss Universe pageant. The Miss Universe Organization operated both pageants, as well as Miss Teen USA, until 2020, when the organization announced it was licensing operation of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants to Crystle Stewart, Miss USA for 2008. The pageant was owned by Donald Trump from 1996 to 2015 and was previously broadcast on NBC. In September 2015, WME/IMG purchased the pageant from Trump. Miss Universe 1953, the 2nd Miss Universe pageant, was held on Friday July 17, at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, United States. Contestants from 26 countries competed in the pageant, which was held concurrently with the Miss USA 1953 event. 17-year-old Christiane Martel from France won the competition, becoming the second Miss Universe.
