The mid-Atlantic Seaboard is an area of the eastern United States along the Atlantic Ocean. The term's meaning changes depending on the user, but generally it always includes the seaports, coastal plains and United States territorial waters of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. It may also include the coastal plains and United States territorial waters of New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and even northern Georgia. The Eastern United States, commonly referred to as the American East, Eastern America, or simply the East, is the region of the United States to the east of the Mississippi River. The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest of the world's five oceans, with an area of about . It covers approximately 20% of Earth's surface and about 29% of its water surface area. A coastal plain is flat, low-lying land adjacent to a sea coast. A fall line commonly marks the border between a coastal plain and a piedmont area. Territorial Waters
The term territorial waters is sometimes used informally to refer to any area of water over which a sovereign state has jurisdiction, including internal waters, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone, and potentially the extended continental shelf.
