Marollen
The ( French, ) or (Dutch, ) is a popular historic neighbourhood of downtown Brussels, Belgium, situated between the Palace of Justice to its south-east, the Chapel Church to its north and the Halle Gate to its south. Its inhabitants are called ''Marolliens''. Lying at the heart of Marolles are the Place du Jeu de Balle/Vossenplein, home to the ''Old Market'', and the Cité Hellemans collective housing complex. Major arteries of the district include the /, the / and the /. This area is served by Brussels-Chapel railway station and Brussels-South railway station, as well as by the metro and ''premetro'' (underground tram) station Porte de Hal/Hallepoort on lines 2, 3, 4 and 6. Brusselian Dialect
Brusselian (also known as , , , or ) is a near-extinct dialect native to Brussels, Belgium. It is essentially a heavily- Francisized Brabantian Dutch dialect that incorporates a sprinkle of Spanish loanwords dating back to the rule of the Low Countries by the Habsburgs (1519–1713). Brusselian was widely spoken in the Marolles/Marollen neighbourhood of the City of Brussels until the 20th century. It still survives among a small minority of inhabitants called ''Brusseleers'' (or ''Brusseleirs''), many of them quite bi- and multilingual in French and Dutch. The Royal Theatre Toone, a folkloric theatre of marionettes in central Brussels, still puts on puppet plays in Brusselian. Place Du Jeu De Balle
The ( French, , "Ball Game Square") or (Dutch; "Foxes' Square") is a square located in the heart of the Marolles/Marollen district of the City of Brussels, Belgium. Since 1873, it has held a famous flea market, known as the ''Old Market''. The area around the square is characterised by the presence of restaurants and typical Brussels cafés. It can be accessed from Brussels-Chapel railway station, as well as by the metro and ''premetro'' (underground tram) station Porte de Hal/Hallepoort on lines 2, 3, 4 and 6. History The square was laid out in 1853, at the same time as the neighbouring /. Halle Gate
The Halle Gate (french: Porte de Hal, ; nl, Hallepoort) is a former medieval city gate and the last vestige of the Fortifications of Brussels#Second walls, second walls of Brussels, Belgium. Built between 1381 and 1383, it was heavily restored in the 19th century in its current Gothic Revival architecture, neo-Gothic style by the architect Hendrik Beyaert, Henri Beyaert. Brussels-Chapel Railway Station
Brussels-Chapel railway station (french: Gare de Bruxelles-Chapelle, nl, Station Brussel-Kapellekerk), officially Brussels-Chapel (french: Bruxelles-Chapelle, link=no, nl, Brussel-Kapellekerk, link=no), is a railway station on the North–South connection in the City of Brussels, Belgium. Despite its city centre location and the busy passing railway line, few trains stop there nowadays. The station was opened in 1952, following construction of the North–South connection, between the stations of Brussels-Central and Brussels-South.
