Manuel Figueira
Manuel Figueira (born November 1, 1938 – died October 8, 2023) is a Cape Verdean artist. Biography Figueira was born in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. When he was a student, he attended the art school of Escola Superior das Belas Artes de Lisboa (School of Fine Arts, Lisbon), now part of the University of Lisbon. He studied and worked as a teacher and took part in numerous municipal exhibitions in Lisbon. After Cape Verde became independence, he went back to his native island, he also brought his wife Luísa Queirós with him. He founded an art college Cooperativa da Resistência (Cooperative of Resistance). He later became the state director of Centro Nacional de Artesanato from 1979 to 1989. His studio is located on the port street known as Avenida Marginal in Mindelo, the city's main street. Luísa Queirós
Luísa Queirós (born in Lisbon) is a Portuguese artist. She lived in Lisbon until 1975 when she moved to Mindelo, Cape Verde and lives with her husband Manuel Figueira whom she met at the School of Fine Arts, Lisbon. Six months before Cape Verde became independent, she met Manuel Figueira in Mindelo. Later on, she instrumented the revitalization of Cape Verdean handcraft works. Already in Portugal and also in Mindelo, she worked for ten years as a teacher in drawing, painting and weaving. In addition, she also wrote illustrated children's works, for which she was honored with a UNESCO Prize. She also wrote a book titled "Saaraci, o ultimo Gafanhoto do deserto" ("Saaraci, the Last Grasshopper in the Desert") written in 1998 in Lisbon and was awarded the Children's Literature Prize by the Gulbenkian Foundation. Centro Nacional De Artesanato
Centro Nacional de Arte, Artesanato e Design (CNAD) (English: "National Centre for Art, Crafts and Design") is a cultural centre in the city of Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde. It is the first cultural institution built from scratch in the country, prepared to host temporary and permanent exhibitions, develop creative residencies and also serve as the basis for a documentary and artistic archive of Cape Verdean traditional and contemporary art production. Avenida Marginal (São Vicente Island)
Avenida Marginal is an important street in Mindelo, São Vicente island, Cape Verde. It runs along the coast of the Porto Grande Bay, connecting the city centre with the northwestern outskirts (Matiota). Its southern end is the intersection with Rua Libertadores de África (the former ''Rua Lisboa'') and Rua da Praia, that continues south along the coast. Avenida Marginal runs along the port of Mindelo, below Fortim d'El-Rei and along ''Praia da Laginha'' in Matiota.
