Manifesta
Manifesta, also known as the European Nomadic Biennial, is a European pan-regional contemporary cultural biennale. History Manifesta was founded in 1994 by Dutch art historian Hedwig Fijen. The first edition took place in Rotterdam. One of the coordinators in Rotterdam was Thomas Meyer zu Schlochtern of the Rotterdamse Kunststichting. Among the local artists brought into the international scene, were Jeanne van Heeswijk, Bik Van Der Pol, and Joep van Lieshout. The 2006 edition of Manifesta was set to happen in Nicosia, Cyprus, under the direction of Florian Waldvogel, Mai Abu ElDahab, and Anton Vidokle. In June 2006, Nicosia for Art, the city-run nonprofit organization sponsoring the exhibition, cancelled the event due to political turmoil around the green line of Nicosia. Manifesta 13
Manifesta 13 was an art exhibition within the Manifesta European art biennial, hosted in Marseille, France, between August and November 2020. Overview Manifesta is a European art biennial that rotates between host cities. It will be the first French Manifesta, hosted in Marseille. Originally scheduled to run June 7 to November 1, 2020, the exhibition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and rescheduled for later in the year, August 28 to November 29, 2020, with a phased rollout of programming. Planning Manifesta 13's artistic team includes Alya Sebti, Katerina Chuchalina, and Stefan Kalmár. Manifesta chose Marseille for 2020 based on its status as an "outsider city" in which residents put their association with the multicultural city before their affiliation with the country. Rotterdamse Kunststichting
The Rotterdamse Kunststichting RKS (''Rotterdam Arts Council'') was an independent foundation to promote art and culture in Rotterdam from 1945 to 2005. In 2005 the foundation merged into the Rotterdam Council for Art and Culture, an advisory body, while the other tasks were transferred to the Art and Culture department of the municipality of Rotterdam. Biennale
Biennale (), Italian for "biennial" or "every other year", is any event that happens every two years. It is most commonly used within the art world to describe large-scale international contemporary art exhibitions. As such the term was popularised by Venice Biennale, which was first held in 1895. Since the 1990s, the terms "biennale" and "biennial" have been interchangeably used in a more generic way - to signify a large-scale international survey show of contemporary art that recurs at regular intervals but not necessarily biannual (such as triennials, Documenta, Skulptur Projekte Münster). Thomas Meyer Zu Schlochtern
Thomas Meyer zu Schlochtern (born 1946 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch art historian and curator, who came into prominence as director of the Arti et Amicitiae and as curator at Rotterdamse Kunststichting in the 1990s. Biography Education and early career Meyer studied art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Ateliers '63 from 1968 to 1972. From 1972 to 1964 he studied another two years art history, criticism and conservation at the KU Leuven. In 1977 Meyer started as staff member (Education) at the Van Abbemuseum. In 1980 he was one of the founders of the artists' initiative De Fabriek in Eindhoven. In 1986 Meyer was assistant director of the International Sculpture Exhibition Sonsbeek 86 Arnhem. In 1987 he was appointed director of Arti et Amicitiae. In 1990 he moved to the Rotterdamse Kunststichting RKS (Arts Council Rotterdam). Jeanne Van Heeswijk
Jeanne van Heeswijk (born 1965) is a Dutch visual artist and curator. Her work often focuses on social practice art, or the relationship between space, geography and urban renewal. She lives and works in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. From 1983-1988 she attended the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilden, The Netherlands. From 1988 to 1990 she attended the Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, The Netherlands. In 1996 Manifesta Jeanne van Heeswijk was among the local artists with Bik Van Der Pol and Joep van Lieshout, who were brought into the international scene with the first Manifesta biennale in Rotterdam. Anton Vidokle
Anton Vidokle is an artist and founder of e-flux. Born 1965, Vidokle lives in New York and Berlin. Work In 2004 Vidokle co-organized e-flux video rental with Julieta Aranda, which traveled to Berlin, Frankfurt; Extra City, Antwerp; Carpenter Center, Harvard University and others. As founder of e-flux, he has produced projects such as Next Documenta Should Be Curated by an Artist (curated by Jens Hoffmann), Do it (curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist), Utopia Station poster project, and organized An Image Bank for Everyday Revolutionary Life (based on the image archive of David Alfaro Siqueiros) and Martha Rosler Library.
