10 Metre Air Pistol
The 10 meter air pistol is an Olympic shooting event governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). It is similar to 10 meter air rifle in that it is shot with 4.5 mm (or .177) caliber air guns at a distance of 10 metres (11 yards), and that the match consists of a qualification round of 60 competition shots within 75 minutes. If an Electronic Scoring System (EST) is not available, 15 minutes are added to the time limit. Competitors are allowed to shoot an unlimited amount of shots during the 15 minutes preparation and sighting time. Along with the 50 meter pistol, it is considered a precision shooting event. Thus, numerous shooters compete in both events. There are some restrictions on the pistol regarding its dimensions, weight and trigger pull weight. Sergei Pyzhianov (born October 24, 1960) is a former Soviet pistol shooter. During the last few years of the Soviet Union's dominance, he was a major star on the pistol team. He was born in Kem. Although never an Olympic champion, he competed at three Olympics, 1980, 1992 and 1996, winning a silver medal in the 10m air pistol in 1992. He also won the ISSF World Shooting Championships three times: in 1986 (50 metre pistol), 1989 (10 metre air pistol) and 1990 (25 metre center-fire pistol). Sorin Babii
Sorin Babii (born 14 November 1963) is a retired pistol shooter from Romania. He competed in the 10 m air pistol and 50 m free pistol events at six consecutive Olympics between 1984 and 2004 and won a gold medal in 1988 and a bronze in 1992. Babii was included to the national team in 1980 and won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals at European junior championships. In 1985 he moved to the senior category and won two bronze medals at world championships and three gold, six silver and four bronze medals at European championships. The shooting competitions at the 1988 Summer Olympics took place in Seoul, South Korea. Competitions were held in a total of thirteen events—seven men's events, four women's events, and two events open to both genders. It was the first games for the 10 metre air pistol events, and the last for the 50 metre running target event, later replaced by 10 metre running target. It was also the first time the Olympic shooting competitions included finals for the top eight (in some cases six) competitors.
