Liouguei Tunnels
The Liouguei Tunnels () are six tunnels in Liouguei District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. History The tunnels were originally constructed during the Japanese rule of Taiwan during the road construction in 1936 to facilitate the transportation of Camphor and logs from the region. The tunnels were later abandoned in 1992 after the completion of Provincial Highway 27A. In September 2017, the Forestry Bureau reopened three tunnels to visitors. Ecology The tunnels are currently inhabited by bats and swallows. Technical specifications The tunnels have a total combined length of 792 meters. Liouguei District, Kaohsiung
Liouguei District, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency ( Taivoan: ''Lakuri''; ) is a rural district of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. It is the third largest district in Kaohsiung City after Tauyuan District and Namasia District. The place-name is derived from the name of a Taivoan community ''Lakuri'' or ''Lakkuli'', which emigrated from Vogavon in Tainan, driven to Kaohsiung by the invasion of Han immigrants and Siraya in the late 17th century. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan. Camphor
Camphor () is a waxy, colorless solid with a strong aroma. It is classified as a terpenoid and a cyclic ketone. It is found in the wood of the camphor laurel ('' Cinnamomum camphora''), a large evergreen tree found in East Asia; and in the kapur tree ( ''Dryobalanops'' sp.), a tall timber tree from South East Asia. It also occurs in some other related trees in the laurel family, notably '' Ocotea usambarensis''. Provincial Highway 27 is a Taiwanese highway that starts from Liouguei, Kaohsiung City and ends in Xinyuan, Pingtung, Pingtung County. Swallow
The swallows, martins, and saw-wings, or Hirundinidae, are a family of passerine songbirds found around the world on all continents, including occasionally in Antarctica.
