LDE – Pegasus
The Pegasus was an early, passenger train tender locomotive operated by the Leipzig–Dresden Railway Company or LDE. History The ''PEGASUS'' was built in 1839, the first locomotive to be built by the Sächsische Maschinenbau-Compagnie in Chemnitz. In 1842, after a long period of trials, she was bought by the Leipzig-Dresden Railway Compagnie for 6250 talers. The unusable locomotive ''COLUMBUS'' was used in part-payment. The design of the ''PEGASUS'' was based on the English locomotive ''STURM''. In 1862/63 the engine was retired from the LDE. The German locomotive series Renner to Greif comprised passenger train, tender locomotives operated by the Leipzig–Dresden Railway Company (LDE). History The five locomotives were delivered in 1837 and 1839 by Thomas Kirtley & Co., Warrington, Lancashire to the LDE. They were given the names: ''RENNER'', ''STURM'', ''ELEPHANT'', ''WILLIAM CURTLEY'' and ''GREIF''. These locomotives were retired between 1851 and 1858. The Royal Saxon State Railways (german: Königlich Sächsische Staatseisenbahnen) were the state-owned railways operating in the Kingdom of Saxony from 1869 to 1918. From 1918 until their merger into the Deutsche Reichsbahn the title 'Royal' was dropped and they were just called the Saxon State Railways (''Sächsische Staatseisenbahnen''). Columbus was a tender locomotive operated by the Leipzig–Dresden Railway Company (''Leipzig-Dresdner Eisenbahn'' or ''LDE''). History The locomotive was sent to the LDE on the recommendation of the Saxon consul in the United States. Similar locomotives had already proven themselves on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. (cf. Tom Thumb) She was built in 1835 by ''Gillingham & Winans'' in Baltimore/USA. In the LDE's company records the locomotive was later described as ''unreliable'' and ''unusable''. Several attempts to give the engine back to the manufacturer failed. In 1842 the locomotive was given to the ''Sächsische Maschinenbau-Compagnie'' in Chemnitz in payment for the ''PEGASUS''. Beyond that, her fate is unknown. She may be identical with the ''TEUTONIA'', which was delivered to the Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway in 1843.
